Kauzmann's work on the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos in 1944-45 contributed to the success of the atomic bomb nicknamed "Fat Man" which incinerated Nagasaki. It was in 1948 that Kauzmann's classic review of liquid supercooling and glass formation drew attention to temperatures at which entropies and enthalpies of liquid and crystal phases would appear to become equal. The collection of such "Kauzmann temperatures" produced characteristic curves in the temperature-pressure T p plane. Professor Kauzmann was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 1966. Laid-in is a copy of Kauzmann's review of the book. First Printing of the First Edition. Hardcover. A clean, unmarked book with a tight binding. 216 pages. 8 1/8" w x 11 1/4" h. A bit musty smelling. Small tears, edge wear, and peeling laminate on price-clipped dust jacket. 265 color photographs and diagrams. Wonderful 1950's ultra-modern graphics in bright colors. "This remarkable book tells the activities of scientists working today in seven major fields: geology, astronomy, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering. It is not a survey of the history and achievements of science, but rather an exciting look-over-the-shoulder at the men, in laboratories and in the field, who are making tomorrow's world."
