Folkema d'après Dubourg, une vignette de titre par Duflos, 27 vignettes et 22 culs-de-lampe gravés par L. F. Dubourg, J. Folkema, G. Kendet, F. M. La Cave, B. Picart et J. van Scley, 61 figures in texte, 7 planches gravées dont une dépliante. "On ne comprendra ce texte qu'en le replaçant dans le combat que Voltaire mène dès son retour d'Angleterre contre le cartésianisme encore dominant en France (…). Il s'agit de gagner l'opinion au newtonianisme et de jouer contre le grand cartésien Fontenelle de ses propres armes. Aidé par Madame du Châtelet qui connaissait mieux que lui le corpus newtonien, Voltaire entreprit de rendre la philosophie de Newton aussi intelligible qu'elle peut être pour ceux 'qui ne sont pas géomètres' " (Inventaire Voltaire, 1965, p. 465).
