First separate printing in the original wrappers, of Einstein's obituary for German astronomer and physicist Karl Schwarzschild, a pioneer in astrophysics. - Edition: Schwarzschild had provided the first exact solution to the Einstein field equations of general relativity, for the limited case of a single spherical non-rotating mass, which he had accomplished in 1915, the same year that Einstein first introduced his »Theory of General Relativity«. - Condition: Wrappers minimally torn at margins, otherwise very well preserved copy indeed, uncut thus obviously not opened at all. - Rarity: ABPC (1973ff.) and APO (1988ff.) record only 1 copy of this edition at auction (2014). - Reference: Schilpp-Shields 100; Weil 87.
Rare and important work on applied mathematics for merchants by Renaissance scholar Francesco Ghaligai. – Author, Content: 3rd and apparently last edition (the 1st was published in 1521, the 2nd in 1548) of this influential treatise by Florentine mathematican Francesco Ghaligai (today Galigai, 1498-1573), containing on the first hand applied mathematics for merchant's calculations. Secondly it is a concise account on all contemporary mathematical knowledge. „L'ouvrage de Ghaligai, moins difus que celui de Pacioli [»Summa de arithmetica, geometria, proportioni et proportionalità«, DJ], a du avoir plus d'influence sur l'etude de máthematiques. C'est un resumé fort bien fait de tout ce qu'on savait alors.“ (Libri). Furthermore Ghaligai's »Pratica d'Arithmetica« is also a milestone in the history of mathematics. In the sections on algebra, he introduces his own notation, and it also contains extracts of Fibonacci's writings that are supposed to be lost, according to Graesse. – Illustration: The book includes 2 wood-cut devices from the Florentine printer Bernardo Giunta, one incorporated in the title page and the other on l. 114v, thus finishing the colophon on l. 114r. Both depict lilies and a snake as main motives, but differ in detail. – Condition: Ll. 82 and 83 [Sign.: Liiii and L(5)] missing. – Title page with crossed out old owner's remark [„Di Fra Franc. dell A (...) tta“], ll. 110 and 111 with two marginal notes. Cover at edges bumped, front paste-down with glued cut out, containing the entry of this edition in an unknown antiquarian catalogue of the 19th ct. Boards worn, some leaves with water-stains at margins and occasionally foxy, binder's cut not even, though with wide margin, generally a well preserved copy. – Rarity: According to Riccardi, Sotheran and De Morgan very rare in all editions even historically. Edizione bella e ricercata di questa importante opera apparsa a Milano nel 1553. Vedi la lunga nota in Autori Italiani del '600 n° 272 per l' edizione del 1669. michel-Michel dichiara 14cc. all' inizio ma Praz 13cc. La nostra inizia con l' occhietto e il frontis rosso e nero cui seguono altre 11cc. Antico rinforzo in pergamena alle cuffie, ottimo esemplare con incisioni in nitida tiratura. Iniziata nel 1760 questa notevolissima impresa richiese anni di estenuanti osservazioni astronomiche (fu appositamente apprestato un piccolo osservatorio in Torino, ed un osservatorio elettrico a Superga), di laboriosi conteggi, di faticosi viaggi e rilievi, e soltanto nel 1764 il Beccaria (di Mondovi 1716-1781) diede comunicazione dei risultati ottenuti. Dentelles interne, sguardie marmorizzate e tagli in oro. Esemplare genuino e ben conservato con solo qualche leggera fioritura alle carte centrali. Copia appartenuta al celebre astronomo e matematico tedesco Joachim Otto Fleckenstein (1914-1980) di cui appare il timbro di possesso alla prima carta bianca ed al frontespizio. Si tratta della seconda edizione, di molto ampliata rispetto all'originale apparso nel 1732 e che, rispetto a quest'ultimo, presenta molti passaggi originali. In quest'opera Maupertuis intervenne per la prima volta sul problema della struttura della terra sostenendo, d'accordo con la visione meccanica newtoniana, che essa e tutti gli altri corpi celesti, fosse appiattita ai poli. Very scarce first separate printings of three important papers on radium by Ernest Rutherford, the "father of nuclear physics". – Author, Contents: New Zealand-born British nuclear physicist Ernest Rutherford (1871-1937) already had been awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry when he moved from McGill University in Montreal to Victoria University of Manchester. To be able to continue his research he was particularly keen to obtain larger quantities of radium. On the other hand in 1905 the Austrian government, then a major player in international efforts to explore radioactivity, had "set up a radium production plant, and two years later it embargoed all exports of uranium ore and products in an attempt to monopolise the market. This continued until about 1913, when other sources could be exploited, for example from Cornwall, Portugal and Colorado." (...) "Thus, when Rutherford moved to Manchester in 1907 Austria was the only place to obtain significant quantities of radium." (Todd) To promote research with the radium at hand the Austrian Academy of Science with the help of investor Karl Kupelwieser, the uncle of Ludwig Wittgenstein, had set up a »Radium-Kommission«, which in 1910 became the famous Vienna Institute for Radium Research (Institut für Radiumforschung). Thanks to his personal contacts to Austrian Chemist Otto Brill Rutherford could organise a considerable quantity of radium in early February 1908 and immediately started experiments to obtain emanation in his laboratory until May 1908. – The documented results of Rutherford's experiments then were first printed simultaneously in the English original as a journal issue (Phil. Mag., vol. 6), as well as in present German translation, this being the first separate printing. The first offprint of the English version was published in August 1908. According to Chadwick et al. the follow up paper from 1911 (»II. Die Umwandlungsgeschwindigkeit«) was first published in German translation first, as present separate printing by the Austrian Academy, as this is true for the 3rd paper of this lot (see enclosed). – ENCLOSED: Ernest Rutherford and Bertram B.
