216 p. + 14 full page illustrations by David Claypole Johnston (1798-1865), a 19th-century American cartoonist, printmaker, painter and actor from Boston, Massachusetts. He was the first natively trained American to master all the various graphic arts processes of lithography, etching, metal plate engraving, and wood engraving. His sense of humor and satire led him to be called the 'American Cruikshank' and 'one of our foremost ante-bellum humorous draughtsmen.' LACKS 2 leaves, pp. 197 to 200. Text and plates foxed.
