Prima edizione di questa importante monografia dedicata alla cometa 1909I la Borrelly-Daniel, scritta dal celebre astronomo e accademico italiano, Luigi Gabba (Torino, 18 dicembre 1872 – Borgomanero, 28 settembre 1948). L’autore, laureatosi a Torino in ingegneria, iniziò, subito dopo la laurea, ad interessarsi ad astronomia frequentando gli osservatori astronomici di Torino, lavorando sotto, Lorenzo Porro e poi anche quello di Roma. Nel 1901 entrò alla Specola di Brera con la qualifica di assistente incaricato di Giovanni Celoria. Dal 1917 al 1921 divenne direttore della specola di Brera aggiornandone ed aumentandone notevolmente la strumentazione scientifica, aggiungendo anche apparecchi geodetica e meteorologici, aumentando la biblioteca dell’istituto. Nel 1824 divenne professore d’astronomia e l’anno dopo astronomo effettivo della Specola di Brera. Nel 1826, vincendo un concorso, assunse, anche, la direzione dell’Osservatorio astronomico di Teramo. Durante la sua vita insegnò anche all’Università di Milano e a quella di Pavia. Gabba fu autore prolifico scrisse di astronomia sferica ed osservativa, astrometria e meccanica celeste ma anche di storia dell’astronomia. L’opera qui presentata, è la rarissima e dotta dissertazione con la quale Gabba presentò i suoi studi sulla cometa 1909I. La C/1909 L1 (Borrelly-Daniel) è una cometa non periodica, scoperta il 14 giugno 1909 dall’astronomo francese Alphonse Borrelly ed il 15 giugno 1909 dall’astronomo statunitense Zaccheus Daniel. Il 14 giugno 1909 la cometa era di 10,5a, il 18 giugno 1909 raggiunse la 9a, l’8 luglio 1909 il suo nucleo era di 13a.
