19305130Lovedale South Africa: Lovedale Press. 1930 1930. First edition. 8vo. 185x120mm. pp. 12 225 1bl. Green cloth lettered in gilt to upper cover and spine. Original illustrated dustjacked chipped and a little torn along top and bottom edges but overall very good and rare in any condition. Internally there is some foxing. An excellent copy in the scarce dustjacket of an important work of African fiction and one of the earliest attempts by an African writer to give an account of pre-colonial Africa and the first novel in English by a black South African. Sol Plaatje 1876-1932 took his name from the Boer family who employed his family on their farm. A brilliant student Plaatje mastered seven languages including Dutch and English which gave him the right to vote although this would be taken away when the new Union of South Africa was created. Throughout his life Plaatje was a leading figure in the struggle for black liberation and was a founder member and first General Secretary of what would become the ANC. Plaatje wrote Mhudi in 1919 although it would take him eleven years to get it published. During this long gestation the book was revised and altered some critics suggesting that it went through a process of censorship and bowdlerization. Whether or not that is so is a matter of scholarly dispute but what is not in doubt is that this novel now firmly established in the African canon represents a brave and early attempt to preserve and regenerate native South African tradition in the face of colonialism. Lovedale, South Africa: Lovedale Press. [1930] hardcover
CNAP067San Francisco: The Arion Press 2003. Limited Edition. Hardcover. New. LeWitt Sol. Square 10 7/8" by 10" 128 unnumbered pages. The type is 24-point Deepdene handset with smaller sizes in Monotype composition by Mackenzie & Harris for subsidiary matter. The drawings were scanned to make negatives for photopolymer plates. The paper is Pescia a mould-made sheet from the Magnani mill in Italy. The binding done in-house is hand-sewn in full gray cloth printed by letterpress with a design that is an enlarged reference to elements in the artist's drawings and titled on the front back and spine. The volume is enclosed in a darker gray cloth slipcase that features the same front and spine titling as on the book. The volume is signed by both the poet and the artist. This was the first of two volumes of Heaney's poetry published by Arion Press the second being "Stone From Delphi" 2012. Seamus Heaney 1939-2013 was lecturing at the University of California Berkeley in 1999. Through Helen Vendler we invited him to come to San Francisco to visit Arion Press and have lunch with us on South Park. On February 9 he arrived bearing a present a copy of the manuscript of a translation he had just made of a Pushkin poem about the legendary poet Arion who in Ovid's "Metamorphoses" is saved from the sea by a dolphin. We printed the poem as a keepsake for Arion subscribers in 2002.

Hoyem proposed to Heaney that Arion Press publish a deluxe limited edition of his forthcoming translation of "Beowulf" with facing Old English. His publishers Faber & Faber and Farrar Straus & Giroux had intended to use only the translation. Heaney took the idea back to his publishers and they agreed to add the Old English text which obviated the rationale for the limited edition.

Vendler prevailed upon Heaney to allow us to instead produce a limited edition of his most important series of poems "Squarings". Hoyem approached Sol LeWitt 1928-2007 to do four prints for the four sections of twelve poems each. Instead the artist offered to do forty-eight drawings one for each of the poems as squares with underlying patterns and overlying scribbles.

Please note that this copy is marked as "Display I" but is still in as-new condition.

___POSTAGE: International customers please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.

___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. 1930304924Los Angeles: Solomon Hodes 1930. Softcover. Near Fine. Modern portfolio with 30 loosely inserted mounted platinum prints and a mounted hand-lettered title page "Photographic Sketches by Sol Hodes". Affixed to the title page is the cover of a small photographic periodical The Developer of the Los Angeles Camera Club dated in 1928 with a clipping presumably from this issue mentioning Hodes in an account of a photography expedition of the Club to Malibu Lake. The images vary in size but are all relatively large most being approximately 7.5" x 9.5". Most are captioned below the image a couple are captioned within the image. The images show a fair amount of talent and the subjects are various: bewitching costumed or semi-costumed women bucolic landscapes prosaic studies of gnarled older gentlemen buildings and cityscapes etc. All are very much of the period. We can find little about Hodes beyond the bare mention of his existence and that he was born in Russia in 1880 and immigrated to the U.S. around 1916. A complete list of images is available upon request. Solomon Hodes unknown

1967158550New York: Slugs' in the Far East 1967. Vintage flyer for several nights of performances held at the historic East Village jazz club. Flyer advertises performances held between February 7 through March 5 1967 with performers including Jackie McLean George Benson Kenny Dorham Stanley Turrentine and Sun Ra and His Astro-Infinity Music.

Robert Schoenholt and Jerry Schultz opened Slugs' Saloon named after G.I. Gurdjieff's "terrestrial three-brained beings" from his "All and Everything" trilogy in Manhattan's East Village in 1964. New York regulations forbade the use of "saloon" and the venue name was soon changed to Slugs' in the Far East due to its East Village location. By the mid-1960s the bar was hosting regular jazz performances and soon became closely associated with Sun Ra whose Arkestra would play regular gigs every Monday as noted on the flyer on offer as "Sun Ra and His Astro-Infinity Music." By the late 1960s Slugs' hosted a number of prominent jazz musicians. including Sonny Rollins Albert Ayler and Ornette Coleman among many others. The club shut down in late 1972 several months after regular performer Lee Morgan was shot to death at the bar by his common-law wife Helen Moore.

5.5 x 8.5 inches framed to 8.5 x 11 inches. 18929New York : Tanglewood Press 1977. Quarto lettered card wrappers pp. 30 photographic illustrations of a brick wall at different times of day in different light. Presentation copy signed and inscribed on the title page in pencil 'For William Sol Lewitt'. A fine copy. 'As a co-founder of Printed Matter in the 1970s Lewitt was a crucial proponent of the artist book as a legitimate and compelling artistic medium advocating the fact that it provides artists with a relatively inexpensive means of exposing their work to a diverse and expansive audience. The artist book became a critical part of Lewitt’s own practice which in many ways focused on deconstructing notions of individual authorship and working collaboratively with other individuals to produce the final work. This book of thirty black and white photographs of a brick wall at different times of the day reflects Lewitt’s interest in Edward Muybridge’s photographic studies of humans and animals in motion as well as his ongoing investigation of serial systems and modular repetition.' - Printed Matter website https://www.printedmatter.org/catalog/tables/74/842 Copies are held major collections of artists books including at The Met the National Gallery of Australia Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
