Einzige Ausgabe dieser seltenen Basler Dissertation über die Amnesie, verteidigt von Johannes Michael Gigas (1582-1637), der später als früher Kartograph Westfalens hervortreten sollte. Seine Karten von Münster, Paderborn und Corvey bestechen "in ihrer sauberen, zum Teil auf eigenen Messungen beruhenden Zeichnung und durch ihre künstlerische Aufmachung [...] Sein bedeutsamstes Werk ist der 'Prodromus geographicus', ein Atlas, der die Erzdiözese Köln und einige ihrer Suffraganbistümer in ihren weltlichen Territorien darstellt (Köln 1620)" (NDB VI, 390f.). Doch auch in der Medizin blieb er lebenslang tätig: "Als Leibarzt des Fürstbischofs übte er eine offensichtlich angesehene ärztliche Praxis aus; so betreute er die Fürsten von Ostfriesland, die Generale Gallas und Tilly und andere hochgestellte Persönlichkeiten, auch das Domkapitel und der eingesessene Adel zählten zu seinen Patienten" (ebda.). - Am Schluß beigebunden ein zeitgenössisches handschriftliches Verzeichnis weiterer 52 Dissertationen mit deren jeweiligen Verfassern. Charles Labelye (1705-1753) was a Swiss civil engineer and mathematician. Moving to England in the 1720s and receiving patronage from the Duke of Bedford and Earl of Pembroke, he is best known for his work on the original Westminster Bridge. He was invited by the Duke of Bedford and the Corporation of the Fens to compile a full and detailed report which was undertaken during periods of special leave granted him by the Westminster Bridge Commission. Hardcover without jacket in good condition. One of the engravings is missing. The following foldouts include; 'Longeitudinal section', 'Plan' and 'Elevation / Firebox'. Piccolissimo ed ininfluente tarletto al margine bianco superiore delle ultime 10 carte. Opera leggermente ed uniformemente brunita a causa della qualità della carta. Alcune minime macchioline di foxing in poche pagine e per il resto, a parte i difetti al frontespizio, in buone condizioni di conservazione. Errore di numerazione a pagine 293 e 294 con numerazione ripetuta due volte. In questo esemplare le due carte di indice sono state erroneamente rilegate alla fine del volume. Bellissime le tavole che contengono, figure geometriche, progetti di fortificazioni, costruzioni e macchinari legati al lavoro dell’ingegnere e del geometra. RARISSIMA PRIMA EDIZIONE di uno dei testi di ingegneria più famosi della storia della Francia che ebbe enorme successo e varie riedizioni fino ad essere ancora oggi ristampato. L’opera tratta delle varie conoscenze utili all’ingegneria civile e militare e all’arte della fortificazione. ASSAI RARO.

Wenckebach". - Karl Friedrich Wenckebach war Professor für Innere Medizin in Groningen, Straßburg und Wien. "Als einer der ersten Internisten spezialisierte sich Wenckebach auf Kardiologie. Besondere Verdienste erwarb er sich bei der Erforschung der Herzrhythmusstörungen, die er noch vor der Entwicklung der Elektrokardiographie diagnostizierte und erforschte. Als Wenckebach-Perioden werden periodisch wiederkehrende Anomalien des Herzrhythmus bezeichnet. 1906 beschrieb er das nach ihm benannte 'Wenckebach-Bündel'. Wenckebach war Begründer und Mitherausgeber des 'Wiener Archivs für innere Medizin' und machte sich um das Institut für Geschichte der Medizin der Universität Wien verdient. 1931 hielt er sich im Auftrag der niederländischen Regierung zum Studium der Beri-Beri-Krankheit in Batavia auf" (DBE).

Top edge coloured in red. First and only Italian edition of George Cheyne's final work (1742), translated by a Florentine physician who attests to Cheyne's enormous popularity in England and addends a brief life of the celebrated doctor to the work. At the same time as Newton's geophysical ideas were being introduced into Italy (against some opposition!), the present work would indicate that Newtonian medicine (of the Edinburgh school) was also in circulation. - The present translation is dedicated to the Venetian Ambassador in London, Lorenzo Morosini, who during his residence "has had leisure to observe the great strides in Medical Science in that country". Most striking are Mei's repeated references to Cheyne as "one of the greatest modern luminaries of the Medical Arts, standing alongside Hippocrates amongst the ancients and the great Sydenham amongst the moderns". - George Cheyne (1671/2-1743) became one of the most prominent defenders of the Newtonian system of medicine in Edinburgh before moving to London in 1701. He was decidedly unsuccessful as a physician in his earlier years, and retreated to Aberdeen in 1705. "Little is known about the period between 1705, when Cheyne suffered his collapse, and 1715, when he re-emerged to the public…" (DNB). However, several of his later works proved immensely popular, among these the present one; according to the DNB the Natural Method "gives the fullest exposition of his mature thought… It both summarized his earlier ideas and added new material. In a section addressed specifically to women, he detailed his preformationist views on generation…". After an inauspicious start, Cheyne appears to have developed his career considerably; Gilbert Burnet and Hans Sloane are said to have referred their patients to him, and his Essay of Health and Long Life (1724) "made him one of the best-known physicians in Britain" (DNB). - Like Sydenham, Cheyne's works managed to reach foreign audiences; a French translation of the Natural Method appeared in 1749, while Cheyne's other works also enjoyed translations into Latin and Dutch. Cosimo Mei's introduction of the English physician to the Italian public is accompanied by a woodcut vignette and a quotation from Virgil, a life of Cheyne, and two prefatory notes to the reader explaining the circumstances of its publication. "Auch für den Unterricht der Taubstummen interessierte sich Graser lebhaft, wollte aber diese Unglücklichen nicht isolirt, sondern in Gemeinschaft mit den Vollsinnigen unterwiesen wissen, weil er von diesem gemeinsamen Verkehr Gutes für die Gesamtbildung hoffte" (ADB). - Die Tafeln zeigen die Zeichen- und Mundstellungssprache, die zur Begründung der modernen Taubstummenpädagogik gehört. - Titel mit keilförmigem Ausschnitt von entferntem Stempel.
