The Irrigation Works of India. Second [and Best] Edition. BRIGHT, CLEAN COPY

Folio, Second and Best Edition, with 5 very large folding coloured maps, 5 large folding plans, 40 photographic plates on 20, and164 illustrations (a number full-page) in the text, half-title very lightly spotted, some very light and occasional marginal spotting to text; original black cloth, upper board blocked and lettered in blind, gilt back, very neatly rebacked in cloth to style, small faded patch on upper board else a very good, bright, clean copy. With 4pp of illustrated industrial advertisements at end. Greatly expanded and updated version of the first edition ['Irrigation Works in India and Egypt'] of 1893. All unsold copies were destroyed by fire at the publishers and it was consequently unavailable by December 1903. The original book also included descriptions of the Irrigation Works of Egypt; these are almost entirely omitted here since Works in India had increased substantially and required greater coverage. A very good, clean copy of the standard reference of the period. VERY SCARCE, ESPECIALLY IN THIS CONDITION.

Rare, early treatise on yellow fever, in the early 19th century a poorly understood disease that was causing much sensation throughout the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and indeed the entire continent, due to several spectacular outbreaks in southern Europe. Not until the 1880s would the cause and transmission (the yellow fever mosquito) be identified correctly. - Estreicher erroneously attributes this brochure to the Spanish physician Juan Manuel de Aréjula, who had published similar works on the subject at the same time (translations even appearing in Vienna). In fact, the booklet was issued on behalf of the Austrian state ("auf allerhöchsten Befehl", at the Emperor's command) and distributed free of charge among general practicioners and surgeons in the Austrian countries so as to disseminate the relevant medical knowledge as quickly as possible. A Polish translation was published that same year. - Browned and duststained; traces of old shelfmarks and stamps to title-page and final blank. 4to. (6), 32 SS. Papered spine. Edges sprinkled in red. First edition. Very rare anatomical dissertation on the female breast, written by the German physician and botanist A. B. Kölpin (1739-1801). Formerly a theologian, Kölpin had to forsake a career as a preacher due to a thoracic illness, whereupon he took up medicine. From 1765 onwards he served as director of the Greifswald Botanical Gardens before moving to Stettin as professor and county physician. A Freemason, Kölpin corresponded with Carl von Linné and published a German translation of Pehr Löfling's botanical travelogue. - Kölpin discusses the overall structure of breasts, the areola, and the exterior and interior parts of the nipple, noting its faculty for "erection in sexual arousal and other states of irritation" (p. 8). He gives an account of the blood vessels, nerves and muscular tissue throughout the breasts. Also, he describes an experiment by which he drives coloured liquids through various lactiferous ducts, proving by the several colour mixtures that they all branch out from a single papilla. - Very slight browning. Vorwort des Autors eine Fliege, "die noch völlig unbekannt zu seyn scheinet". Das Kupfer mit sechs Abbildungen der Fliege im schönen, zeitgenössischen Kolorit. Der evangelische Theologe und bedeutende Naturwissenschaftler Jacob Christian Schäffer (1718-1790) widmete sich "naturkundlichen Studien und legte eine Reihe von Sammlungen an. 1757 wurde S. Mitglied der Deutschen Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina. [...] und war Mitglied zahlreicher wissenschaftlicher Gesellschaften in Europa" (DBE).
