1886142150Lancashire: unpublished 1886. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Lancashire unpublished 1886. Small quarto 245 pages of a 288-page notebook with numerous manuscript diagrams one coloured. Quarter roan and sand-grain cloth; covers rubbed and a little worn about the spine with slight loss; traces of childish scribbling in pencil to the front endpaper; a few signs of age and handling with a small hole in one leaf; overall in excellent condition. The neatly-written notes and well-executed drawings appear to relate to a technical education course covering cotton processing with particular emphasis on the types and configurations of machines for ginning carding spinning and weaving cotton. More broadly subjects include the planting picking pests and diseases of the cotton plant the characteristics of different kinds of cotton recipes for size and the assessment of cloth. The latter part of the notebook includes questions from examination papers and what are perhaps model answers.
The front pastedown is inscribed 'Joseph A. Prescott June 7th 1886' father of South Australian soil scientist and climatologist James Arthur Prescott CBE. A biographical memoir of the latter includes some scanty but pertinent details about his father: 'Joseph Prescott began adult life as a fitter of textile machinery at the site of installation. This work took him to Italy Alsace then part of Germany and northern France. His special line of expertise was in machinery for fine spinning the comber and spinning mule. He rose from fitter to maintenance engineer to foreman and to manager in charge of development' see below for source. This notebook must date from near the beginning of his career.
Offered together with a copy of 'James Arthur Prescott 1890-1987' by C.G. Stephens and J.P. Quirk an offprint from the 'Biological Memoirs of Fellows of the Royal Society' Volume 34 1988 and two later related ephemeral items. unpublished] hardcover

1950234871950. Industrial drilling operations engineering crews and heavy extraction equipment dating to the 1950s-1960s. The group records workers assembling servicing and operating large drilling rigs and mechanical boring equipment in both field and industrial shop settings. New hydraulic systems diesel-powered rigs and mobile boring equipment allowed construction and engineering firms to reach deeper foundations quarry sites utility corridors and oil-bearing formations with unprecedented speed.

Archive of 9 large-format silver gelatin and color photographs each measuring 8" x 10". Several photographs focus closely on the machinery itself: hydraulic drill assemblies suspended by cranes pipe sections and cylindrical boring units laid out for repair cable-fed drilling towers and articulated rigs positioned against exposed rock and excavation walls. Workers appear handling drill heads aligning equipment inspecting mechanical components and assisting with assembly procedures. One image includes a Motorola mark suggesting possible corporate or engineering documentation use. The photographs preserve the visual language of postwar industrial extraction industries when drilling technology expanded rapidly alongside highway construction mineral exploration petroleum infrastructure utilities work and large-scale civil engineering projects.

Following World War II mechanized drilling became central to the expansion of North American infrastructure and resource extraction. Minor surface wear and toning overall very good condition. These photographs document the labor required to sustain that industrial growth with crews working directly beside dangerous and mechanically complex equipment maintaining the machinery that powered mid-century construction transportation and energy development. unknown

Comprises of eleven beautifully arranged dried flower specimens mounted on stiff leaves most excepting two accompanied with their original remarkably well-preserved tissue-guards and individually captioned with their respective geographic origins e.g.: "Flowers from Mount Zion" "Flowers from the Mount of Olives" etc. Lightest wear to the leather spine else no other flaws noted to the extremities. Faint toning to the title page otherwise contents remain near-uniformly without blemish and with firm sound binding. A most lovely and unique period offering from the Holy Land. Rare to be offered in commerce in this edition and state. This edition unrecorded in WorldCat however nominally corresponds to OCLC #753636624 with notable differences in pagination and the number of specimens. See also OCLC #698494522. Rare indeed.

¶ Title leaf cites Biblical verse Matt. VI 28 29 30 which reads in part: "28 Why are you anxious about clothes Learn from the way the wild flowers grow. They do not work or spin. 29 But I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was clothed like one of them. 30 If God so clothes the grass of the field which grows today and is thrown into the oven tomorrow will he not much more provide for you O you of little faith" Although no author nor compiler is given within the present offering corresponds to other similar such works attributed to German missionary and cabinet-maker Ferdinand Vester see references above who had moved to Jerusalem in 1853 to join the Swiss-German Mission. Accordingly the present work may have been the result of his collaboration with the efforts of the London Jews' Society's' "House of Industry" an Anglican missionary society located at Christ Church Jerusalem which offered vocational training to Jewish boys in various trades such as carpentry turnery shoemaking etc. The products produced by these boys would in-turn be sold to other missionaries or as religious souvenirs to passing tourists or those migrating to the West. Vester's son Frederick would carry on his father's business later marrying Bertha Spafford herself the daughter of the founder of the American Colony in Jerusalem Horatio Gates Spafford and his Norwegian wife Anne Tobine Larsen Øglende. 1917Q1817New York: Privately printed for Robert J.F Schwarzenbach 1917. Hardcover. Good. Quarto 12 x 9.25 inches bound in half Morocco with striped silk; 167 3pp. Top edge gilt bottom edge untrimmed. Privately printed Presented to Co-Workers and Friends. This copy has a gift inscription in German dated 1920 though the name is unclear Der Veylasser. In Very Good condition with rubbing to extremities and shallow fraying to the fabric less severe than seen with other examples. Two color plates printed on semigloss stock have some discoloration noted in other examples but the copy is overall bright and clean. The monograph was initially issued to mark the U.S. operation's 25th anniversary in 1912 when they moved to a massive 12-story headquarters in New York where the iconic Silk Clock was installed in 1926. Although the book made it to press in 1913 the foreword indicates The first compilation was hurried however and lacking in many essentials" especially "data and illustrations from abroad 11. This edition has been embellished with all the visual bells and whistles Robert Schwarzenbach desired incorporating an uncommonly broad range of printing techniques from photogravure to offset lithography. Copious in-text portraits vignettes and ornaments are peppered with 35 total leaves of platesmany printed both sides and on varying paper stocks: 2 photogravure plates 3 full color plates 25 leaves with 39 pages of halftone photographs many two-tone one folding plate and 4 leaves with 7 pages with striking color charts reminiscent of DuBois' data graphics. The book details the company's history and global operations with a hefty portion devoted to its American facilities and operations. While largely celebrating its present state the text notably goes into detail about the political and economic conditions: "The year 1896 was in other respects disappointing. The free silver campaign of William Jennings Bryan demoralized business. It was during this periodwhich followed the enactment of the Dingley Tariffthat imports steadily fell off and the silk industry of the United States experienced almost monumental growth" 89. It also addresses advances in machinery the management of workers where those beautiful data graphics come in and the company's civic responsibilities. A lavish and thoughtful production that humbles modern luxury brand monographs. OCLC shows no copies in North American institutions 2 copies in Europe.

Privately printed for Robert J.F Schwarzenbach hardcover

Stiff glossy paper covers measures 10.25 inches 26 cm x 14.5 inches 37 cm with 22 architectural drawings almost all full page and mainly in full color. We could find no record of this publication outside of China. The text is entirely in Chinese. The Google translation of the text on the fifth photograph is as follows: "Architectural drawing is an important means for architectural designers to express their design intentions explore design plans and improve their artistic accomplishments. In their design practice many architectural designers have drawn a large number of architectural drawings and they also often do architectural sketches. This album is selected from the drawings sent to our agency by many architectural designers and art workers across the country. After our agency issued a notice to collect architectural drawings in March this year many architectural designers and teachers from the Department of Architecture of colleges and universities responded enthusiastically and sent more than 1700 works. Our agency invited relevant experts to form an architectural painting selection committee to evaluate these works. The selection committee was composed of the following comrades: Bai Zuomin Qi Kang Zhu Ying Hua Yiyu Du Rujian Wu Liangyong He Zhenqiang Zhang Kaiji Zhong Xunzheng Xi Xiaopeng Huang Yuanqiang Peng Yigang and Dai Nianci. After repeated evaluation more than 200 excellent works were selected. When selecting the proportion of the number of works of each type of painting was appropriately considered. This album will be published on the eve of the 30th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. We hope that this album can reflect the great achievements of my country's socialist construction from one aspect and at the same time we also hope that this album can play a role in exchanging architectural painting techniques and improving the artistic quality of architectural designers. 192680739Nashville: The McQuiddy Press 1926. First Edition. First printing. Inscribed on front endpaper: "To Nettie Spielman / with best wishes from / Geo. D. Hay "Solemn Old Judge" dated 1933. Tight Near Fine copy lacking the dustwrapper.

Hay 1895-1968 started his career in print journalism but made his name as a radio personality primarily in Nashville where he was the originator and long-time Master of Ceremonies of the Grand Ole Opry program on WSM from which the venerable live stage variety show at the Ryman Auditorium drew its name. Between musical acts Hay would intersperse comic interludes in the character of "The Solemn Old Judge" a character he had first invented for his column "Howdy Judge" in the Memphis Commercial Appeal. These columns are reproduced here; they are mostly in the form of racist caricature very much drawn from the minstrel show tradition the typical premise being an African-American character appearing in court before a white judge with much white-supremacist hilarity to follow the Black voices written in exaggerated dialect.

Hay adapted his "Solemn Old Judge" persona to radio along the way establishing the basic character of the popular American "hillbilly" music industry - white southern and racially segregated - that placed country music in direct opposition to the race-mixing socially "degenerate" music of the northern cities especially New York. In the words of sociologist Richard Peterson: "The down home rural card was a good card to play.because there was such fear of what was happening in the cities. There was so much race mixing there was so much jazz there was all kinds of degradation in music. Here was a way of finding a pure unadulterated American music that came out of an Anglo-Saxon background. They Hay and the Grand Ole Opry made up a whole bunch of stuff." quoted in American Public Media "New York Clashes With the Heartland" audio documentary. An historically important book despite its racially offensive underpinnings somewhat scarce and seldom found signed. The McQuiddy Press unknown

AQ23305London: s.n. 1740 Single bifolium. 3pp 1. Docket title to verso of second leaf. A trifle creased. An early example of commercial Parliamentary lobbying literature published in small numbers for distribution to Members of Parliament in order to influence opinion in the run up to debates and divisions highlighting in eleven clear points the commercial situation for the wool trade in Worcester lamenting the failures of the Worcester Clothiers Company then appealing to Parliament for financial assistance. It is made clear that rival clothiers in Gloucestershire Somerset and Wiltshire have remained profitable and sought to export their wares abroad particularly to Turkey at which the Worcester trade has failed.
