Embossed & decorated softcovers front cover decorated & illustrated in gilt & burgundy w/ peacock feather above lettering and nicely executed lithograph on back cover of young saleswoman standing next to a rack of rubber boots & shoes for sale minor toning shelfwear very slight tidemark at upper fore-edge front cover still a VG copy. First edition of this nicely printed Victorian catalogue for rubber boots and shoes. The nicely executed lithographs promote the Hip Boots hip waders thigh high sporting boots double thick Pebble Leg Boots and Fairy Boots reminiscent of cowboy boots as well as the rubber Duck or Canvas Boot for hunting. Also included are many different styles and varieties of rubber shoes for women and children including No Heel Imitation Sandals Gossamer Imitation Sandals Buskins with cotton flannel lining Opera Dew Drop Feather Weight and many others. The company also produced tennis rubber soled shoes croquet shoes as well as heavy duty Stalwart Lumbermen’s Shoe intended to fit over logger’s Wool Boots or German Socks. Leverett Candee 1795-1863 obtained early patent rights from Goodyear for manufacturing rubber shoes as early as 1844 and by 1852 had organized the large Candee Rubber Co. factory with the Hotchkiss Brothers in New Haven and Timothy Lester. 454Colchester Connecticut. Colchester Rubber Company Black Miniature Rubber Advertising Boots<br /> <br /> 2 rubber vulcanized boots measuring approximately 2 x 2.75 inches at their widest. One boot has 1.5 inch split on front seam which is hard to discern unless in hand. Text stamped on both sides of boots. The letter "L" missing from one boot. Good condition.<br /> <br /> The Colchester Rubber Company was founded by George Watkinson in 1888 in Colchester Connecticut utilizing the former Hayward Rubber Company Factory Plant. Hayward Rubber had developed a type of vulcanized rubber which Colchester continued to market. These advertising boots likely were used by salesmen to market their products. The Colchester line of footwear were very popular in the 1880's and were on display at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893. The United States Rubber Company as part of their plan to create a rubber monopoly in the United States purchased the Colchester Company in 1892 and closed the plant in mid 1893 collapsing the economy of the small town of Colchester. <br /> <br /> A rare pair of late 19th century vulcanized rubber advertising boots from a short-lived factory in Connecticut. unknown
