Nel furore degli scontri, un ragazzo dodicenne è colpito da una sciabolata in pieno volto. Per le gravi lesioni subite, resterà balbuziente e sarà sempre conosciuto con il soprannome di Tartaglia. È questo grande matematico, insieme al collega e rivale Gerolamo Cardano, il protagonista di un momento cruciale per la storia della scienza: la scoperta e la disputa intorno alla formula risolutiva per le equazioni di terzo grado, il primo vero progresso dell'algebra dopo un sonno che durava da secoli. Nel Cinquecento, in Italia, i matematici si affrontavano in pubblici duelli, davanti a folle di spettatori, sfidandosi a risolvere problemi complessi. Dalla vittoria o dalla sconfitta dipendeva la successiva fortuna personale e scientifica dei due avversari. Secondo questa tradizione, Tartaglia e Cardano furono vividi attori - insieme a Scipione Dal Ferro, Ludovico Ferrari e ad altri comprimari - della polemica più feroce che la storia della matematica ricordi.
