Die Legende "Apud Achill: Matthaeum in marmore" verweist auf eine antike Marmorbüste des Thales nach der der Stich gearbeitet ist. Gottlieb Friedrich Riegel 1724-1784 Augsburger Kupferstecher schuf zahlreiche Bildnisse und Ansichten oft nach fremden Vorlagen. Folgeblatt innerhalb einer Serie antiker Philosophenporträts bestimmt für gelehrte Porträtsammlungen und/oder als Frontispiz zu philosophischen oder historischen Werken. Das Bild zeigt die Marmorbüste des Thales auf einem vorspringenden Kartuschenpostament eingefasst von einem streng rechteckigen Rahmen mit ornamental betonten Ecken; der Körper der Büste bleibt skizzenhaft während Gesicht und Haar plastisch ausgearbeitet sind. Die klare Linienführung die glatten Lichtflächen der Skulptur und die feine Rahmendekoration entsprechen dem spätbarock-klassizistischen Porträtstich des späten 18. Jahrhunderts und betonen den Charakter einer musealen Sammlungsansicht. Thales von Milet um 624-ca. 546 v. Chr. war milesischer Politiker Kaufmann und einer der frühesten Naturphilosophen; antike Autoren zählen ihn zu den "Sieben Weisen". Ihm werden u.a. "die Vorausberechnung einer Sonnenfinsternis geometrische Sätze über Kreis und Dreieck und die Lehre dass Wasser das Urprinzip arche aller Dinge sei" zugeschrieben. Auch wenn seine Gestalt nur aus spätere Überlieferung bekannt ist gilt Thales als Symbolfigur für den Übergang von mythischen zu rationalen Erklärungsmodellen der Natur; das Porträt als klassische Büste knüpft an diese kanonisierte Rolle an. Thales wird seit der Renaissance in Philosophen- und Gelehrtengalerien geführt; sein Bildnis erscheint in Druckfolgen Buchillustrationen und Skulpturenreihen die die Genealogie der "Vorsokratiker" visualisieren. Der hier vorliegende Stich Riegels trägt zu dieser Tradition bei indem er Thales als museal präsentierte antike Büste zeigt und damit für Bibliotheken und Kunstkammern des 18.
