Covers soiled and a bit edgeworn one cvorner chipped. The contents are very good and the impressions and colors are quite lovely. This work despite its French text may be seen as squarely in the tradition of the Japanese ehon and it shares many characteristics of the revival of picture book printing in mid to late Meiji demonstrated by other works: an emerging Nihonga style skilled printed increasingly restrained coloration etc. In that context the large scale of its illustrations renders it particularly interesting. First two volumes only (of a multi-volume set) with greeen leather spine and corners and marbelized paper-covered boards and marbelized endpapers. Tooled leather volume numbers and titles on spine (missing title on Volume 2). Gilt top edges. Bottom two inches of leather spine on Volume 1 is detached. The front board of volume 2 is completely detached and the leather spine is loose. Interior pages are clean and unmarked; binding is tight. Text in French. Decorations by Pierre Laprade and illustrations by Edmond Malassis and Fred Money; color engravings by Andre Baudier and Paul Baudier.

Golden external edges of pages. In good conditions. Full cloth cover in very good general conditions slightly worn in the edges and spine. Binding in very good conditions. Inside pages are in very good conditions with occasional foxings.
