He was the founding editor of the JOURNAL OF SYMBOLIC LOGIC. Among his most influential contributions are Church's Theorem Church's Thesis and the Lambda Calculus. His work was of major importance in mathematical logic recursion theory theoretical computer science and functional programming languages in general. Professor Church's creation of lambda calculus was the foundation for the LISP programming language and provided the semantic model for ALGOL. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences British Academy and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Church is regarded by many as the greatest American logician of the 20th century. For more on Church's contributions see items 250 251 321 394 and 533 in Hook and Norman's ORIGINS OF CYBERSPACE A LIBRARY ON THE HISTORY OF COMPUTING. From Introduction: "In the course of this study I shall expound and criticize the theories and methods of Logical Positivism in an order of presentation which seems best suited to represent them with utmost fairness. I shall present the logical foundation of Positivism first. Then the applications of the method of analysis to mathematics and natural science will follow. Next I shall treat of the elimination of metaphysics and the consequence of this. All of this will be preparatory to the consideration of a specific case of positivistic analysis which presents a theory of knowledge free from metaphysics. This is the LOGISCHER AUFBAU DER WELT of Rudolf Carnap. Then I shall present the doctrine of Physicalism as a separate philosophical system. The study will be concluded by a theory of language which seems to me to overcome the difficulties of both Logical Positivism and Radical Physicalism." . First Edition. Hardcover.
