Lo scopo di questo testo è illustrare i principi generali dei sistemi di elaborazione, facendo riferimento ad architetture e sistemi reali e introducendo contestualmente i principi di base delle tecnologie abilitanti e il loro impatto sulle architetture. Il testo consente al lettore di analizzare come l'evoluzione delle tecnologie microelettroniche incida sulle soluzioni architetturali dei sistemi di elaborazione. Viene, quindi, proposto un percorso che affianca alla classica trattazione, che illustra i modi di funzionamento dei calcolatori elettronici, un nuovo approccio basato su approfondimenti inerenti all'evoluzione e alle prospettive delle nuove soluzioni tecnologiche e alle loro implicazioni sullo sviluppo e la progettazione di nuovi modelli architetturali, affrontando in modo sistematico anche le tematiche relative alle tecniche d'interazione fra i nodi di elaborazione e il mondo esterno con riferimento ai problemi di interconnessione di più unità e al progetto di unità di I/O, nonché a quelli posti dai sistemi embedded nel loro impiego in molte applicazioni industriali.

Pur conservando l'ormai nota e inconfondibile metafora che vede un calcolatore come una gerarchia di livelli, questa nuova edizione presenta numerosi cambiamenti, che allineano i contenuti del manuale allo stato dell'arte dei più recenti sviluppi dell'industria. Gli esempi presentati riguardano Intel Core i7, OMAP4430 di Texas Instruments e ATmega168 di Atmel. Il Core i7 è un esempio di CPU largamente utilizzata su portatili, desktop e server, OMAP4430 è una diffusissima CPU basata su ARM, molto utilizzata su smartphone e tablet e ATmega168 è il microcontrollore della piattaforma open-source ARDUINO, presente in numerosi sistemi integrati, dalle radiosveglie digitali ai forni a microonde.

This was reviewed by Olaf Helmer in Church's Journal of Symbolic Logic Volume 3 Issue 1 1938 41-42. This volume was among several dozen books from Alonzo Church's library that we were lucky enough to purchase at auction in New Jersey. Several of the books contain his signature or a presentation inscription to him. Unfortunately this volume does not have those signs of his ownership. But please check our inventory for several others that do. Alonzo Church 1903 - 1995 was professor of mathematics at Princeton University 1929-1967 and of mathematics and philosophy at UCLA 1967-1990. He was the founding editor of the JOURNAL OF SYMBOLIC LOGIC. Among his most influential contributions are Church's Theorem Church's Thesis and the Lambda Calculus. His work was of major importance in mathematical logic recursion theory theoretical computer science and functional programming languages in general. Professor Church's creation of lambda calculus was the foundation for the LISP programming language and provided the semantic model for ALGOL. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences British Academy and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Church is regarded by many as the greatest American logician of the 20th century.
