Questo volume costituisce un'introduzione all'uso dei morfismi e delle loro composizioni fino a giungere alle proprietà universali dei morfismi, 5 articles principali (le lezioni, nella nostra traduzione) presentano i concetti fondamentali, mentre 3 sessions (seminari) discutono, approfondiscono, applicano quei concetti in forma chiara, discorsiva, con grande ricchezza di particolari e in un continuo ed efficace scambio con gli studenti. La discussione è illustrata da numerose figure sicché il volume si presenta egregiamente anche ad uno studio personale, al dii fuori cioè di un corso accademico ed è accessibile anche ai non iniziati alla matematica. In effetti, i prerequisiti richiesti al lettore sono minimi. La teoria delle categorie è stata introdotta circa cinquant'anni fa e da allora ha assunto un ruolo sempre più centrale in matematica, ha condotto in essa a notevoli unificazioni e semplificazioni e si presenta con sempre maggior frequenza nelle applicazioni dalla matematica alla fisica, all’informatica (computer science) alla logica, alla linguistica ecc. Si tratta insomma di una teoria estremamente potente e concettualmente molto ricca. La comparsa di questo volume, che può essere considerato di alta e rigorosa divulgazione nel senso migliore di questa parola, è quindi un evento importante per la conoscenza della matematica e per il suo insegnamento. F. William Lawvere, fra i più noti categoristi viventi, insegna alla S.U.N.Y. in Baffalo.
