Questo libro ripercorre la vita del Mahatma: dai primi passi di bambino timoroso del buio, all'intenso rapporto con la moglie Kasturbai, alle difficili esperienze da avvocato di provincia fino alla conquista di una condizione spirituale che ne ha fatto "la più importante figura religiosa dei nostri tempi" e insieme un uomo d'azione, in grado di guidare la pacifica liberazione dell'India dalla dominazione inglese e di ispirare grandi personalità del Novecento come Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela e madre Teresa. Tutto questo non deve meravigliare in un uomo che affermava: "Chi sostiene che la religione non ha niente da spartire con la politica, non sa cosa sia la religione". Di fondamentale importanza, nel documentare la storia di un uomo che aveva fatto del suo corpo la più alta testimonianza del suo credo, è l'apparato iconografico, restaurato per questa edizione. Arricchiscono il volume una nuova introduzione dell'autore, una prefazione di Michael N. Nagler e un introvabile scritto di Aldo Capitini dedicato a un importante aspetto della vita del Mahatma, quello di educatore. Postfazione di Timothy Flinders.
