Toller Cranston was a prominent Canadian figure skater. He won the 19711976 Canadian national championships the 1974 World bronze medal and the 1976 Olympic bronze medal. Despite never winning at the World Figure Skating Championships due to his poor compulsory figures he won the small medal for free skating at the 1972 and 1974 championships. Cranston is credited by many with having brought a new level of artistry to men's figure skating. . He quickly gained a reputation as the most innovative and exciting artistic skater of his time one of the first to emphasize use of the whole body to express the music as well as to execute skating moves in best form to lie down while sliding down the ice and to wear elaborate costumes.13 He was particularly known for the quality and inventiveness of his spins which were widely copied by other skaters. Quarto di sette fratelli, cresce in un ambiente familiare e comunitario molto vivo, che desta in lui molteplici interessi e una inesauribile passione di vita. Tutto lo interessa, tranne lo studio. Per questo i genitori lo iscrivono all'Istituto Sacro Cuore di Milano. Di lì a poco emergono i sintomi di una malattia che diventa la circostanza attraverso la quale realizzare il suo più profondo desiderio: diventare santo. Sorprendentemente la malattia lo rende ancora più intenso, teso a vivere pienamente ogni incontro e ogni istante: «Io da questa malattia ho imparato l'obbedienza a Gesù, perché non posso decidere quello che faccio nel giro di un'ora. Perché se mi viene la febbre non posso fare quello che avevo deciso. E così ho imparato ad obbedire a Gesù in ogni momento». Fino a una totale consegna di sé, come scrive agli amici pochi giorni prima di morire: «Carissimi, a cosa serve la vita se non per essere data? Io adesso sono a completa disposizione. Non devo più decidere. Ma a questo punto è tutto nelle Sue mani. Voglio concludere ogni cosa per poter non far altro che aspettare».
