After thanking him for his ‘kind and seasonable letter’ he states that he is ‘not much affected by rude abuse in parliament or through the press’ as he is ‘pretty well hardened in that respect’ and that he ‘may possibly have an opportunity’ in his own ‘proper place’ ‘of explaining & vindicating’ his position for the purpose of which he asks Allan ‘for somewhat more particular information in regard to monumental inscriptions in Christian communities’. He explains that he is referring to Allan’s comment that he does not ‘recollect having seen lines from an uninspired penman with the exact place of the quotation in his writings’. He asks if this applies to Roman Catholic cemeteries. ‘It would be no inconsistency to have the Apocrypha quoted in them’. br. Rita da Cascia (1381-1457) ha attraversato tutte le dimensioni femminili e ha fatto della sua esistenza un capolavoro cristiano. Vissuta in un'epoca segnata da forti contrasti politici e religiosi, nella quale abbondarono i santi, i letterati e gli artisti e la donna era chiamata a rappresentare l'equilibrio, la stabilità, la concordia e la maternità, Rita fu cercata, stimata, amata, apprezzata, ascoltata e incise enormemente nel tessuto sociale in cui operò. Partecipando, abbracciata alla Croce, alla Passione di Gesù, ha ottenuto una sovrabbondanza di grazie: è l'unica, fra i mistici della storia della Chiesa, ad aver ricevuto in fronte una spina della corona di Cristo. Le grazie e i miracoli che compie da secoli sono innumerevoli e continuano a essere registrati nel monastero dove visse. Per sua intercessione migliaia di persone sono state salvate nel corpo e nell'anima con guarigioni e conversioni straordinarie e per questo in tutto il mondo è conosciuta come «la santa degli impossibili». I suoi simboli sono le rose, l'uva e le api e ognuno di essi è legato a dei miracoli. A Santa Cruz, nello Stato brasiliano del Rio Grande do Norte, le è stata dedicata nel 2010 la statua cattolica più alta del mondo a riprova del fatto che il culto ritiano non conosce flessioni.

Il suo nome, legato alla tragica campagna di Russia, è noto in Italia e in Germania, in Austria e in Spagna, fra centinaia di migliaia di reduci, come quello di un uomo che non ha avuto paura né delle angherie né della morte. Migliaia e migliaia di uomini, che vissero per mesi, anni o lustri le drammatiche vicissitudini della prigionia nell'Unione Sovietica durante la Seconda guerra mondiale, lo ricordano con commossa ammirazione e con profonda riconoscenza per ciò che fece in aiuto di tutti i sofferenti, senza distinzione di nazionalità e di fede. Tra le motivazioni della Medaglia d'oro al valor militare, conferitagli dal governo italiano nel 1951, si legge: "Esempio sublime di pura fede e di quanto possa un apostolo di Dio e un soldato della Patria".

ONE: Autograph draft of conclusion of description of his meeting with Mehmet Ali ‘Mehemet Ali’. The ODNB states that in July 1836 Cobden produced a pamphlet ‘which analysed the Russo-Turkish dispute . attempting to play down the Turcophilia that was rife in Britain in the 1830s. In October Cobden embarked on a long tour sailing via Lisbon Gibraltar and Malta to the eastern end of the Mediterranean as far as Constantinople meeting Mehmet Ali in Egypt before returning via Greece in April 1837.’ The present text is the conclusion of the draft manuscript of the account he gave of that meeting and had published in Tait’s Edinburgh Magazine in November 1838. 1p foolscap 8vo. The page is headed ‘20’ and carries ten lines of text one and a half lines of which are deleted. Lightly aged worn and creased. On reverse in pencil in a contemporary hand: ‘Cobden / M. S. S His work in Turkey’. The text reads with deleted passage in square brackets: ‘Often in recurring to my interview with this extraordinary man - the spring-like elasticity of whose mind evinces its power in proportion as it is pressed - and recollecting the eagerness of his enquiries upon practical subjects - as well as the vehemence of manner with which he sustained his opinions - evincing the spring-like elasticity of mind which manifests its power in proportion as it is pressed - I think with pleasure of the refreshing & animating scene not unmixed with regret that I shall probably never again have the opportunity of chatting with old Mehemet Ali’. TWO: Slip of paper cut from the beginning of a letter in the third person with reverse blank. In fair condition lightly aged. Reads: ‘Mr Cobden presents his compliments to Mr Cornwall Lewis & begs to forward for presentation to the Lords of the Treasury a memorial’. THREE: Printed form response with thick black border. 1p 32mo. In fair condition on discoloured paper. Reads with manuscript text in square brackets: ‘Mr & Mrs Cobden return thanks for the favor of Mr Smiths kind enquiries. / Midhurst 20 June 1856’. The word ‘return’ has been altered from ‘returns’. Addressed to 'Jas Thomson Esq'. Reads: 'Dear Sir / I have forwarded your list of names to the Land Tax Office / & remain Dear Sir / faithfully Yours / Richd Cobden'. Pencil note in a contemporary hand at the foot of the letter: 'The Great Anti Corn Law man. / Mr. Thompson sic to whom it was written was proposed by Cobden & seconded by Bright of the Free Trade Club. The present item was enclosed in a letter from Serjeant Shee the future Sir William Shee offered separately sent from the House of Commons on 17 February 1854 in which he writes: ‘I enclose Mr. Cobdens own handwriting to send to the Papers -’. Attached to a corner at the head of the first page of the present item is a cutting from the Morning Herald newspaper 18 February 1854 reproducing the details in the manuscript. That circumstance taken with certain references in the Shee letter suggest that the recipient of both was either James Johnstone proprietor of the Morning Herald or his editor Robert Knox. 2pp 12mo. On the rectos of the two leaves of a bifolium. In good condition lightly aged and worn with a few pin holes at top inner corner and slight damage at the foot of the gutter unobtrusively repaired with archival tape. In pencil in contemporary hand on front page ‘Cobdens writing / see accompg letter’. Text reads: ‘Petitions Mr Cobden / Cropton Yorkshire. / for the repeal of the Taxes on Knowledge / Wm. Woods Mitchell of Arundel printer & publisher of the “West Sussex Advertiser†for the repeal of the compulsory stamp on newspapers. - / Passengers in Emigrant ship Maidstone proceeding to the Colony of New South Wales for Ocean penny postage / Mechanics Institution Kingley Yorkshire for Decimal Coinage’. Il lavoro di ricerca è stato svolto sulle fonti costituite dagli scritti del sacerdote, dalle cronache delle comunità a cui appartenne; sostenuto dalla conoscenza e amicizia personale dell'autrice con il sacerdote, il testo è stato integrato dalle interviste realizzate con familiari, amici, ex commilitoni, parrocchiani, insegnanti, politici. Il volume è suddiviso in due parti: la prima appunto biografica; la seconda costituita da un'antologia degli scritti di don Fanfani. Una scelta cospicua che ha innervato il lavoro di scrittura, testi prevalentemente inediti, dal 1969 al 2011, manoscritti o dattiloscritti. La storia e il pensiero di don Renzo Fanfani sono meritoriamente trasmessi tramite questo prezioso libro "per la forza, la lucidità e l'originalità con cui egli ha esercitato il suo essere prete operaio, parroco, uomo impegnato nelle vicende sociali, politiche e culturali del suo tempo.
