Born in 1928 Philip began his career in bookbinding and book art in 1949 graduating from the Royal College of Art in London with First Class Honours in 1954. He was an internationally renowned designer bookbinder and book artist. He designed and created intricate and fascinating bindings for well over 50 years and was awarded gold and silver medals in several international competitions. In 2000 he was awarded an MBE for services to Art. Philip was a great innovator having invented and pioneered several ground-breaking and influential techniques and structural developments. His work is represented in many private collections and can be seen in several public collections overseas and in the UK including the V&A National Art Library and the British Library. A deluxe issue of the Book of Common Prayer marking the accession of King George V printed on real vellum. The colophon on the verso of the title denotes this as copy #5 of six copies thus. However Griffiths reports that there were two issues of six copies each and notes the title-page is printed in red & black -- it is here printed in black only. Beige cloth over boards white stylized woman’s head with hair spelling 'Kaliflower' on front cover the hair wrapping around spine onto back cover; gray laid paper end papers. Bright generally clean covers and spine have few small spots; firm square corners; tightly bound; crisp clean interior. Brilliant colorful images and print on every page. Starting in April of 1969 Sutter Street Commune in S.F. following Digger philosophy began issuing a free intercommunal newspaper to area communes to ‘pass the dharma’ i.e. share information with other like-minded communards. For the next 3 years Kaliflower was distributed on a weekly basis eventually to nearly 300 communes. This volume is drawn from some of those issues but also has some commentary about the making and growth of Kaliflower. As with everything this group produced nothing is signed or attributed. One of the Sutter Street Commune founders was an experienced printer and the press work was high quality. This is a nicely bound fine quality volume. Loose folded sheet. 1319</p><p><i>A delightfully riotous publication with texts attributed to former King Mob member Phil Cohen and associates in the London Streeet Commune. The poster illustration on the pamphlet's verso depicts a youth with a huge erection being sentenced to correction bu authorities at a "Penal Institution." Our expert source informs us that Agro was printed in an attempt to organize London's hippie greaser and skinhead youth cultures to work together against ruling class oppression rather than antagonize one another. "At the end of 1969 the pilot – and only! – issue of Agro tried to mobilize the skinhead opinion. The paper 'printed by the Gutter Press' bore the stamp of the London Street Commune and most of it in fact consisted of an abridged version of 'Project Free London' a small booklet to which I shall refer again. An editorial claimed that Agro would be produced and distributed not from an office but through an informal network of 'skinheads greasers heads; in pubs caffs clubs and on the streets'. The Commune was worried because skinheads and greasers had mobilized against each other instead of against straight society and they saw Agro as a way of combining forces as a 'single subcultural front.'"
