Folio 35.1 cm 13.8". 260 pp. Pickering's beautiful type facsimile of Robert Barker's 1604 edition a.k.a. the Hampton Court Book here in a Rivière binding. Charles Whittingham printed the work on handmade paper in black-letter type for Pickering who inspired by the printing of Aldus Manutius published in 1844 a series of six such facsimiles of important editions of the Book of Common Prayer each of which was => illustrated with wood-engraved initials and ornaments done by Mary Byfield and limited to => only 350 copies printed on paper with another two on vellum. The original title-pages were reproduced for each in => red and black and in the case of the present example the almanac pages likewise printed in red and black. Each book in this homage to important editions of the BCP was => an outstanding example of the Victorian-era Gothic design movement and Kelly notes that these volumes are "considered to be among the finest work of Whittingham." Â Â Â Â Binding: Signed 19th-century dark brown morocco framed and panelled in single gilt and double blind fillets with gilt-tooled corner fleurons surrounding a central arabesque medallion; spine with raised bands gilt-stamped fleur-de-lis decorations in compartments and gilt-stamped publication information. All edges gilt. Front lower turn-in stamped by Rivière. Â Â Â Â Provenance: Front free endpaper with small stamp of Basil M. Pickering who took over the business after his father's death; later in the library of American collector Albert A. Howard small booklabel "AHA" at rear. Â Â Â Â Large heavy quarto family bible smaller and more manageable and less expensive than the large folios intended to be used at the lectern in church but still quite substantial. These family Bibles also could contain as in this case the Book of Common Prayer and the "old" version metrical psalter with the expectation that they would serve the master of the house in leading family worship. Â Â Â Â Provenance: "William Tillsons Bible" in manuscript above manuscript family records on the recto of the first blank; other family notes are recorded on its back and on the verso of the front free endpaper. Someone has taken the trouble to paste a large slip of paper onto the recto of the front free endpaper over a large ownership note that may read "Thomas Tilison His Bible Septr 4th 1784. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Prayer Book: Griffiths Bibliography of the Book of Common Prayer 1786/2; ESTC N66721. Psalter: not in ESTC. Bible: not in Darlow & Moule or ESTC; Herbert 1286. Contemporary calf covers panelled in blind with remnants of clasps. Front joint open with cords strongly holding; covers abraded with incisions and leather loss to edges; spine leather dry and cracking; front fly-leaf and next blank detached. Prayer Book only lacking title-page and two preliminary leaves; another early leaf detached with a closed tear across no loss of text. Bible: Foxing and brown spotting with a few closed tears and occasional chipping in the margins the last resulting in loss of words from a few shouldernotes. Bulmer 1802. 8vo 24 cm 9.5". vi 694 pp. There were minor differences between the Prayer Books of the Church of England and the Church of Ireland up until 1801 the year that the churches merged; the various 1801 BCPs were the first to use the "United Church" designation. John Reeves had been appointed king's printer in 1800 and edited his own version of the BCP of which this is the second edition; the separate title-page following the preliminary matter is dated 1801. That preliminary matter offering historical and liturgical commentary is extensive and interesting. Â Â Â Â Fore-edge: This beautiful example bears a subtly shaded => fore-edge painting showing Westminster Abbey in the background behind a waterfront view with sailboats. Â Â Â Â Binding: Full straight-grain dark olive green morocco covers framed in elegant feather and pearl twist gilt roll turn-ins with floral gilt roll. Stone-pattern marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Griffiths Bibliography of the Book of Common Prayer 1802/1. Binding as above mild rubbing overall with some abraded areas consolidated joints and extremities subtly repaired aesthetically appropriate endbands supplied. Title-page with inked ownership inscription dated 1803 "The gift of my beloved husband." Intermittent faint spots of foxing mostly confined to early leaves. 17149Girls' Education. Handwritten monthly Teacher's records from November 1873 to April 1883. Teacher's Monthly Reports for Penns Creek School Number 6 in Limestone School District Union County Pennsylvania. Issued by the Department of Common Schools Union Co. Penn. Harrisburg: Benj. Singerly State Printer 1873. Original paper boards. 92 pages. size: 16 x 11.5 in. Ledgers include names of Male and Female students in separate columns. While there is a sharp gender imbalance recorded in the first month 17 boys to 6 girls by the end of the record book there are even numbers of male and female students; and in some months such as November 1877 there are significantly more girl names listed. In the second half of the 19th century there were rapid gains for women's education in the United States as common schools spread over the Northeast and provided public education for both girls and boys. With the growth of common schools and more educational opportunities for girls more women at this time were also working in schools as teachers and headmistresses. In these ledger books teachers were to record numerous statistics related to their classes including: Names and Ages of Pupils Attendance Lateness and Absence Number of Days Attended Number of Days belonged. Total Attendance for Term Progress and Conduct and Number of Pupils. "So important are the items of statistics under this head that no teacher should be allowed to draw his salary until he has them all currently entered for the month." The teachers were also instructed to record other important statistics including: Number Admitted since first of June til Date Whole Number in Attendance during Month Average Attendance during Month Average Attendance during Term till date Percentage of Attendance Visits by County Superintendent Books Used Pupils without Necessary Books and Certificates and Receipts. The date is confirmed by its citation in a Congressional report "Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer On Charges Made Against Department Of Justice By Louis F. Post And Others." "We have on many occasions issued to you calls for action. We have told you that protest meetings will not help to free the thousands of social war prisoners but only by real action through the starting of the general strike throughout the entire country will they be freed. You did not listen to us who urged action. You chose the easier road. You listened instead to politicians who asked you to beg of the exploiters of America to be so kind as to release those whom they imprisoned. We remind you of the mistakes that you have made and how you have been fooled and betrayed." Warns that those who participate in May Day parades sponsored by the National Security League "will be traitors to our class" calling on readers to mark May Day instead by forming anarchist groups to begin a general strike. "When we march or hold our meetings we must never forget to be armed to repel those misguided soldiers or policemen who will dare to attack us as they have done until now! . The First of May should be the signal for the start of the social revolution in this country." The author whose original name was Shmuel Marcus went by many pseudonyms the best-known of which was Marcus Graham; he claimed to be a native of Montreal but when the United States attempted to deport him to Canada Canada refused on the grounds that there was no actual evidence of his Canadian citizenship. Other attempts to deport him to Mexico and the Soviet Union were similarly rebuffed. The author went on to edit the newspaper Man! one of the most important American anarchist publications of the 1930s. unknown books
