I’ve ordered 5000 copies of THE NEXT STEP direct from the printer and shall have to sell them without benefit of publisher’s travellers’. He describes the book as ‘a religio-political analysis of our total social distress; 100% Socialist but disrespectful to Marx; seriously religious but contemptuous of the leaders of the institution Church or Churches; but most contemptuous of all of the intellectual atmosphere breathed in and out in the Senior Common Rooms of our Universities which actually is last two words underlined the social sickness from which the Western World is suffering’. He will have ‘a better idea of what you might be able to do with this book of mine’ once he has seen ‘Books and Bookmen’: ‘But if you have any ideas about what I could do to help you to help my book to be known do write and tell me.’ He lays out the plans for publication ‘subject of course to there being no sharp deterioration in industrial working’. 8930Oxford: B. H. Blackwell Broad Street 1905. 12mo 27 pp. Pamphlet stitched with red ribbon. In original wraps with title printed in red on front cover. Title-page in red and black. Lord Rosebery's unobtrusive ownership blindstamp in top right-hand corner of title. Good tight copy in grubby and lightly-spotted covers. Containing three jeu d'esprit: two poems 'Ruth' and 'Esther' and a spoof 'model essay' 'to assist candidates' to the Green Philosophical Prize titled 'The Reciprocal Relations of Morals and Metaphysics'. A very short preface reads 'It is we think matter of regret that so few of our University prizes are open to Senior Members of the University. The Sacred Poem and the GREEN Philosophical Prize are we believe the only exceptions. The following Poems and Essay were humble attempts to secure these prizes; but owing possibly to some failure on the part of the Judges to appreciate their eminent merit failed in doing so. We venture to submit them to the judgment of a discerning Public.' Scarce: no copy at the British Library and the only copy on COPAC at Oxford. The only copies on WorldCat at Yale and the Claremont Colleges. Image attached. Oxford: B. H. Blackwell, Broad Street, 1905. paperback

1920256949n.p. 1920. 11.25x16 inch broadside horizontal fold minor toning; "Marcus Graham group 1920" penciled in bottom margin couple of old paper tape repairs on blank verso. The date is confirmed by its citation in a Congressional report "Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer On Charges Made Against Department Of Justice By Louis F. Post And Others." "We have on many occasions issued to you calls for action. We have told you that protest meetings will not help to free the thousands of social war prisoners but only by real action through the starting of the general strike throughout the entire country will they be freed. You did not listen to us who urged action. You chose the easier road. You listened instead to politicians who asked you to beg of the exploiters of America to be so kind as to release those whom they imprisoned. We remind you of the mistakes that you have made and how you have been fooled and betrayed." Warns that those who participate in May Day parades sponsored by the National Security League "will be traitors to our class" calling on readers to mark May Day instead by forming anarchist groups to begin a general strike. "When we march or hold our meetings we must never forget to be armed to repel those misguided soldiers or policemen who will dare to attack us as they have done until now! . The First of May should be the signal for the start of the social revolution in this country." The author whose original name was Shmuel Marcus went by many pseudonyms the best-known of which was Marcus Graham; he claimed to be a native of Montreal but when the United States attempted to deport him to Canada Canada refused on the grounds that there was no actual evidence of his Canadian citizenship. Other attempts to deport him to Mexico and the Soviet Union were similarly rebuffed. The author went on to edit the newspaper Man! one of the most important American anarchist publications of the 1930s. unknown
