La maggior parte dei lavori di Fresnel era stata pubblicata su riviste di conseguenza, l'edizione di questa monumentale opera, permise di diffondere la conoscenza di questi studi basilari. Di grande importanza per le sue scoperte in campo fisico, fu la realizzazione di particolari integrali, detti appunto di Fresnel, grazie ai quali fu possibile studiare rifessione, rifrazione, interferenza e diffrazione

In-24 gr. (mm. 128x75), p. pergamena coeva, titolo ms. al dorso, tagli rossi, 10 cc.nn., 201 pp. num., 3 cc.nn., compresa la bella antiporta allegorica inc. in rame. Importante opera dell’erudito gesuita tedesco (1601-1680), dedicata ai fenomeni magnetici rilevati in natura. "Seconda edizione" (la prima in-4 fu pubblicata a Roma, lo stesso anno), rara. Cfr. Brunet,III,667 - Caillet,II,5781: “Kircher tente de démontrer un grand nombre de phénomènes par le Magnétisme” - De Backer,I, p. 429: “L’auteur assure que la nature n’a aucun secret que ne puisse pénétrer l’observateur attentif, et pose en principe que l’attraction et la répulsion peuvent servir à expliquer les phénomènes les plus obscurs de la physique. Il explique, d’après cette hypothèse, la production des minéraux, des pierres précieuses, des plantes, et les affections et les antipathies qu’on remarque dans les animaux”. Pagine ingiallite per la qualità della carta, altrimenti esemplare ben conservato.

In 4° (cm 14,5 x 20,), cartonatura settecentesca con segni d'uso, cc 315 [i.e. 311], [1] , illustrazioni silografiche nel testo ad ogni pagina, dati tipografici ripetuti all'ultima carta. Impresa al frontespizio: Leone rampante in scudo sormontato da elmo (sul quale si trova altro leone) sostenuto da due guerrieri. Nel nostro esemplare sopra i due guerrieri non compaiono i nomi: Scipion e Fabio, come descritto in Edit 16. Esemplare in buone condizioni, bruniture non gravi, strappetto all'ultima carta senza perdita di carta, timbro al frontespizio, macchiette marginali al frontespizio; alla sguardia annotazioni di antica mano tratte dal Tiraboschi ("Storia della letteratura italiana"), sulla presente opera, il quale definisce il Tartaglia "questi è uno fra quelli che si possono chiamare dotti a dispetto della fortuna". Altra mano antica chiosò: "Pascal in età ancor tenera ebbe quest'opera tra le mani e la studiò con impegno, come si rileva dalla sua vita". Tartaglia, matematico di origine bresciana, (m. 1557) si trasferisce nel 1534 a Venezia, che diviene da allora in poi sua patria di adozione. A Venezia egli divenne professore di scienze matematiche e, nel 1537, pubblicò la sua prima opera: la Nova scientia, dedicata alla balistica (cioè allo studio della traiettoria dei proiettili). Nel 1543 egli fu in grado di dare alle stampe sia una traduzione italiana - che risultò essere la prima in una lingua volgare europea - della maggiore opera di Euclide, sia l'edizione latina di alcuni scritti di Archimede.
