Père Jésuite né à Pau en 1636, le père Pardies eut une vie scientifique brève et intense. Il correspondra notamment avec Newton. Première édition au format in-8 de cet ouvrage très important dans lequel Saussure décrit comment construire un hygromètre à cheveux capable de mesurer le degré d'humidité. Saussure fait aussi connaître sa découverte : l'air se dilate et devient spécifiquement plus léger à mesure qu'il se charge d'humidité. Deux planches gravées sur cuivre sont reliées en fin de volume : la première représente l'hygromètre à cheveu inventé par l'auteur et construit pour la première fois par Paul à Genève.
