Il Gilbert (Colchester 1544 - Londra 1603), laureato in medicina e fisica, si formò a Cambridge e a Oxford. Dopo un periodo di studi in Italia, allora centro del rinnovamento scientifico e tecnico, si stabilì a Londra dove divenne medico di corte. Quest'opera è una trattazione sistematica dei fenomeni fisici che l'A. ha sperimentato con metodo scientifico; spiega le proprietà dell'ago magnetico, la declinazione e l'inclinazione magnetica, l'asse magnetico e le linee di forza di un magnete sferico, a cui viene assimilata la terra, e la possibilità di impiego di queste conoscenze nella navigazione marittima.
