ill., br. La fisica ha una pessima reputazione. È considerata difficile (con tutta quella matematica!), arida e, molto spesso, semplicemente noiosa o inutile. Ma ne siamo poi così sicuri? Muovendo dalla constatazione che tali pregiudizi hanno portato al dilagare di un analfabetismo scientifico a dir poco pericoloso in un'era caratterizzata dallo sviluppo incessante di nuove tecnologie, Goldberg e Blomquist affrontano gli interrogativi che stimolano realmente l'immaginazione di tutti noi. Poco importa se l'attenzione per un argomento scientifico nasce da un film di fantascienza o dalle notizie allarmistiche sulla fine del mondo causata da un acceleratore di particelle: ciò che conta è sfatare il mito che con la fisica non ci si possa divertire imparando. Che cosa ci succederebbe se viaggiassimo alla velocità della luce? Si può costruire una macchina del tempo? Si può essere in due posti contemporaneamente? E se l'Universo si sta espandendo, in che cosa si sta espandendo? Sono solo alcune delle domande alle quali questo libro cerca di rispondere, con un umorismo talvolta dissacrante.

br. Secondo Stephen Hawking, esistono innumerevoli copie di noi stessi in innumerevoli altri universi dove la nostra vita è solo leggermente, o magari completamente, diversa da quella che conosciamo. Ma potrebbero esserci anche universi dove la vita non esiste affatto, perché le leggi della fisica possiedono parametri che non la rendono possibile. Negli ultimi trent'anni gli scienziati hanno accumulato indizi a favore dell'ipotesi del multiverso, secondo cui esisterebbe un numero enorme, se non addirittura infinito, di universi. Una volta dominio della fantascienza, quest'ipotesi potrebbe oggi spiegare tante stranezze della fisica, come i particolari valori delle costanti fondamentali, il Big Bang, le bizzarrie della meccanica quantistica, la natura ultima della realtà. Ma sarà mai possibile riuscire a dimostrare l'esistenza di altri universi?
