John Speed 1552-1629 is unquestionably the most significant English map-maker of the seventeenth-century. A brief note from Granger's Bibliographical History of England 1779 contains most of the information we have about Speed's life: "John Speed who was bred a Tailor was by the generosity of Sir Fulk Grevil his patron set free from a manual employment and enabled to pursue his studies to which he was strongly inclined by the bent of his genius. The fruits of them were his Theatre of Great Britain containing an entire set of maps of the counties drawn by himself his History of Great Britain richly adorned with seals coins & medals from the Cotton collection; and his Genealogies of Scripture first bound up with the Bible in 1611 which was the first edition of the present English translation. His maps were very justly esteemed & his History of Great Britain was in its kind incomparably more complete than all the histories of his predecessors put together ." The first edition of Speed's "Theatre" was published in 1612. It was the first atlas of the British Isles and the first attempt made by an Englishman to match the achievements of the great continental publishing houses - although much of the engraving of the copper plates was performed in Amsterdam by Jodocus Hondius. Speed was an antiquary and intended that his atlas should be read in conjunction with his history of Britain. He managed to include a great deal of historical detail on his 'modern' county maps and the inset town plans some surveyed by himself together comprise the first collection of town plans of the British Isles all in all making the Theatre a highly decorative as well as a useful volume. It was a great success and there were editions printed throughout the seventeenth-century. Map Richard Chiswell unknown

Speed's Map of Cheshire Double-page engraved map with hand-colour some discolouration to margins and to left and right of image. A map of Cheshire from the 1676 edition of the first large-scale atlas of the British Isles Speed's 'Theatre'. In the top-centre of the map is an inset town-plan of Chester with four coin medallions possibly showing: Julius Caesar the emperor Vespasian the emperor Domitian and the 20th Legion which was among those to invade Britain with Claudius in 43CE. Along the left-hand side of the map are depicted the arms of the Earls of Chester since the Norman Conquest among them 'Ranulph Blundeuill' and 'Ranulph Gernones'. John Speed 1552-1629 was the outstanding cartographer of his age. By trade a merchant tailor but by proclivity a historian it was the patronage of Sir Fulke Greville poet and statesman that allowed him to pursue this interest in earnest. His 'Theatre of Great Britain' from which the present work is drawn was first published in 1611 or 1612 and is 'the earliest English attempt at atlas-production on a grand scale' Skelton. Drawing heavily on the work of Saxton and Norden little of Speed's cartography is original he acknowledges 'I have put my sickle into other mens corne' instead it is his blend of cartography and history incorporating town-plans vignettes and genealogy that makes Speed an innovator. This map is from the 1676 edition of the 'Theatre' published by Thomas Bassett and Richard Chiswell. Interestingly this map lacks the text in English that is usually printed on the verso. Spine rubbed top front corner bumped otherwise good. OCLC: 57296131<br /> <br /> Speed John 1552–1629 historian and cartographer was born in 1552 in Farndon Cheshire. His father was also called John and was a member of the Merchant Taylors’ Company; his mother was Elizabeth Cheynye. He was brought up in his father's trade and in 1580 was himself admitted into the Merchant Taylors’ Company. At this time he also speculated in property and acquired a number of sites through the patronage of the Taylors’ Company and through Sir Fulke Greville first Lord Brooke.<br /> <br /> However although Speed is regarded as the first English historian as opposed to chronicler or annalist it is through his hobby that he is best known; he made maps of English counties in his spare time. In 1598 he presented a number to Queen Elizabeth and in 1600 others to the Merchant Taylors’ Company. Speed became a recognised and skilled cartographer – his insertion of town plans into his maps in particular was a distinctive feature. In 1607 he copied John Norden's map of Surrey for William Camden's Britannia and in 1608–10 published a series of fifty-four maps of England and Wales. These were issued in 1611 as his famous Theatre of the empire of Great Britain. In 1608 the publisher George Humble was granted the twenty-nine-year privilege to print this book ‘compiled by John Speed’ CSPD 1603–10 425. Cracking starting to top spine over rear hinge c. 7cm but hinges still holding firm. Wear to top and bottom board edges with discreet fairly early repairs to board corners. Top edges darkened other edges speckled red. Single splash mark to fore-edges. Large folio 35.5 x 29.5cm. Replacement laid paper endpapers with cracking just starting at gutters. Two older armorial bookplates laid down to inside front board: one of Julius Bertram of Sishes End Hertfordshire either Julius Bertram 1866-1944 Liberal politician or his father of the same name and one older bookplate with minor loss with boar passant. Owner's signature of Elizabeth Pryor in old hand to replacement blank front endpage. Trimmed remains of lettering in old hand to top dedication page. Title page from the 1627 edition ESTC S124203 bound in with imprint 'Imprinted at London: Anno Cum Privilegio 1627. Are to be sold by George Humble at the Whit horse in Popes-head Alley'. However this is the 1650 third edition ESTC S121978 not the 1627 second edition. T.p. substitution is indicated by the fact that pattern of minor worm damage to t.p. does not match that to frontis and dedication page. This and the slightly smaller size of the t.p. in comparison to other sheets as well as sigs pagination 49 rather than 47 unnumbered pp. to rear and presence of the 1629 frontis. port. engraving by Samuel Savery indicate that this is the 1650 Humble edn with the 1627 t.p. bound in other possible edns do not have matching pagination or signatures. We have included a printout of the 1650 t.p. from an online edition showing near-identical t.p. engraved by the notable Dutch cartographer and engraver Jodocus Hondius after a design by Speed. Some black smut marks to pp. 860-61 and 900-01 none more than c. 8cm obscuring text slightly. Slight dampstaining to bottom outer corner final 10ff. Very minor worm damage extending from rear of vol. to p. 725 two holes to margin with one pinprick hole only affecting text. Minor worm damage extending down from single hole in top edges mildly affecting pp. from title page to p.384. At no point does this amount to more than c. 4 pin-holes slightly affecting text near top page. Illustrated throughout with in-text illustrations decorated initials headpieces and tailpieces all the work of the engraver Christopher Switzer. John Speed 1551/2-1629 historian and cartographer. Speed produced his History of Great Britain as a continuation of its companion atlas volume The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine pagination continuous from companion vol. but this vol. is complete in itself. Both were the result of 'industrious research and reading' ODNB with the encouragement and assistance of the foremost antiquarians of the time including William Camden and Sir Robert Cotton. This product of early Stuart optimism and nation-building first published in 1611 and creating 'Great Britaine' for the 'most potent monarch Iames' the first king of both Scotland and England is in this 1650 edition republished just before the end of the civil war that was to see the Stuart monarchy expelled from Britain for a decade. This is a reissue of the 1611 first edition with the date to the title page altered accordingly ESTC No. S122020. While the text starts on p. 151 this book is complete in its own right: conceived as a companion volume to Speed's grand atlas "The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine" and the pagination continues from that work. Fully collated includes the errata leaf to the rear often lacking the scarce "Proeme" author's preface; it is only the front and rear blanks not present. There are several errors with the pagination e.g. pp. 804 & 805 are numbered 796 & 797; Leaf 802 is misnumbered as leaf 801. A Baptist minister and the first assistant librarian in the British Museum's Department of Manuscripts. He was also the museum's first numismatist in 1756 Early inconspicuous manuscript shelf marks to the first few pages. A good complete copy though ideally requiring rebinding. Interior primarily clean and bright however does have occasional old faint tide-lines to either corners fore-edge or upper edge. Bottom quarter of 10th leaf excised possibly a contemporary handwritten note faint ink traces seen above the cut-line very occasional contemporary ink notes and corrections in margins page 11/12 wanting instead there are two page 15/16s very small and narrow wormhole from p. 663 to p. 682 still eminently readable with only loss of single letters lacks frontispiece portrait. Overall quite a good clean copy. Speed's 'History' was dedicated to James I and was first published in 1611 as a continuation of the 'Theatre of Great Britaine.' Second Edition revised and enlarged and reissued in 1625 and again in 1627; Speeds Historie of Great Britain was originally published in 1612 with The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine as a companion volume though continuously paginated The Historie being the second work and the contents listing refers to the first four books which were part of the Theatre although this work books 5 - 10 is complete in itself. His account of the reign of Henry VIII p. 998 is followed by an appendix described in the running head as A Catalogue of the Religious Houses Colledges and Hospitals sometimes in England and Wales. These sections hold a wealth of information on early successors and founders of English Institutions. It was likely Speed an apt historian himself borrowed many of his materials from William Camden and was supplied by many Sir Robert Cotton Sir Henry Spelman and other antiquaries with whom he was acquainted. Although he probably had access to historical sources that are now lost to us he certainly used the work of Saxton and Norden his work as a historian is considered mediocre and secondary in importance to his map-making and the town plans he drew. Despite its many defects the Historie was very frequently cited by later writers. An important rich historical and artifactual book on Early English history.
