Ex-library book with the usual stamps, stickers, etc. Binding is solid and text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind, page block is a little warped. 262 pages with lots of large b&w photos, including one kissed by Salvador Dali. Dust jacket has edge wear, scuffing, library stickers. Jack Johnson was the first black heavyweight champion, was a world traveller, a music hall performer, a prisoner at Leavenworth, a matador in the bullrings of Spain, a speed demon, a connoisseur of the arts and women, and a Renaissance man at the turn of the 20th Century. Front cover is heavily soiled and abraded at the bottom near the spine with damage to the cover chromolithograph; binding is generally rubbed; early 20th century gift inscription on the front free endpaper; finger soiling and toning throughout but primarily to the first third of the book; three full page chromolithographs are very nice only one has minimal finger soiling to the margin. Copper engraving 38.5 x 51.5 cm modern hand-colour closed tear in the sea beside the vignette of a naval engagement trivial spotting English text to verso. Speeds 'carte à figure' map of Italy with eight costume vignettes and six city views around the edges with the coats of arms of Corsica and Sardinia. John Speed 1552-1629 is unquestionably the most significant English map-maker of the seventeenth-century. The first edition of Speed's Theatre was published in 1612. It was the first atlas of the British Isles and the first attempt made by an Englishman to match the achievements of the great continental publishing houses - although much of the engraving of the copper plates was performed in Amsterdam by Jodocus Hondius. Our map of Italy appeared in Speeds Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World the first world atlas attributed to an Englishman first published in 1627; again many of the plates were engraved in Amsterdam mostly by Abraham Goos. Le tome 1 : L'Ancien testament Gonzo reprend les première et troisième parties de l'œuvre originale et le tome 2 : Le nouveau testament Gonzo, regroupe les deuxième et quatrième partie du livre original. Superbe état général. Complet en 2 tomes. La Grande Chasse au requin ( Gonzo Papers ) est un recueil de textes, par Hunter S. Thompson, pape et pionnier du nouveau journalisme, qui a côtoyé Nixon et les Hells Angels. Il a créé l'interview pissotière et le reportage azimuthé pour le mythique Rolling Stone. Ses notes de bars astronomiques sont aussi légendaires que sa passion pour les flingues. Et ses bouquins acides et allumés doivent beaucoup à son goût pour les psychotropes. Le recueil, publié en 1979, est composé d'articles provenant de diverses publications telles que le National Observer, The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Scanlan's Monthly, The Reporter, Playboy et autres, publications pour lesquelles Thompson travaillait en tant que correspondant ou pigiste. Le livre contient également des extraits de Las Vegas Parano. Ces articles couvrent une période qui commence au milieu des années 60 et qui se termine au milieu des années 70.
