Very scarce first separate printings of three important papers on radium by Ernest Rutherford, the "father of nuclear physics". – Author, Contents: New Zealand-born British nuclear physicist Ernest Rutherford (1871-1937) already had been awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry when he moved from McGill University in Montreal to Victoria University of Manchester. To be able to continue his research he was particularly keen to obtain larger quantities of radium. On the other hand in 1905 the Austrian government, then a major player in international efforts to explore radioactivity, had "set up a radium production plant, and two years later it embargoed all exports of uranium ore and products in an attempt to monopolise the market. This continued until about 1913, when other sources could be exploited, for example from Cornwall, Portugal and Colorado." (...) "Thus, when Rutherford moved to Manchester in 1907 Austria was the only place to obtain significant quantities of radium." (Todd) To promote research with the radium at hand the Austrian Academy of Science with the help of investor Karl Kupelwieser, the uncle of Ludwig Wittgenstein, had set up a »Radium-Kommission«, which in 1910 became the famous Vienna Institute for Radium Research (Institut für Radiumforschung). Thanks to his personal contacts to Austrian Chemist Otto Brill Rutherford could organise a considerable quantity of radium in early February 1908 and immediately started experiments to obtain emanation in his laboratory until May 1908. – The documented results of Rutherford's experiments then were first printed simultaneously in the English original as a journal issue (Phil. Mag., vol. 6), as well as in present German translation, this being the first separate printing. The first offprint of the English version was published in August 1908. According to Chadwick et al. the follow up paper from 1911 (»II. Die Umwandlungsgeschwindigkeit«) was first published in German translation first, as present separate printing by the Austrian Academy, as this is true for the 3rd paper of this lot (see enclosed). – ENCLOSED: Ernest Rutherford and Bertram B. First separate printing in the original wrappers of this 2nd and last supplement of a „fundamental paper on nuclear fission which eventually lead to the creation of the atomic bomb.“ (Dibner) – Contents, Edition: The German radio and nuclear chemists Otto Hahn and Fritz Straßmann "bombarding uranium with neutrons (as indicated by Fermi in the mid-1930s), found that treating the bombarded uranium with barium resulted in some strongly radioactive material. By late 1938 they suspected that uranium fission had occurred.“ These epochal findings had been presented by Hahn and Straßmann to the Prussian Academy on May 25th 1939. Their paper indicates in detail „fission of the uranium nucleus into two parts of about equal size with the release of much energy.“ – If the 1st paper from 1939 („Über das Zerplatzen des Urankernes durch langsame Neutronen.“) contains the first comprehensive description of this core nuclear achievement, the following two corresponding papers published by Hahn and Straßmann with support by chemist Hans Götte during the Second World War in 1942 („Einiges über die experimentelle Entwirrung der bei der Spaltung des Urans auftretenden Elemente und Atomarten.“) and the present of 1944 describe experiments to identify the fission fragments. – Alongside the aforementioned an Austrian woman scientist of Jewish descent, Lise Meitner, colleague of the authors at the Berlin Kaiser-Wilhelm-Institute of Chemistry for decades, also contributed heavily to their findings. Meitner had to flee Nazi Germany in 1938 but continued her research in exile, e.g. in Copenhagen, where she worked in the laboratory of Niels Bohr. Through Bohr and Fermi this nuclear energy was to become a reality in the atomic pile and the bomb blasts of 1945 as well as in the nuclear power stations of the following decades. The De Sitter model, which competes with the Einstein cosmos, was the dominant cosmological model until the 1930s. La Coudraye (1750-1815) era interessato a fenomeni meteorologici prodotti dall'interazione dell'aria con l'acqua. Le sue osservazioni sul vento e sulle onde tentano di identificare vari modelli meteorologici ricorrenti. Egli è incuriosito dall'apparente presenza fissa degli alisei, dall'arrivo ricorrente dei monsoni, e vuole trovare un accurato metodo per misurare i fenomeni meteorologici (velocità del vento, lunghezza delle onde, ecc.) al fine di arrivare ad un approccio più scientifico nello studio dei fenomeni atmosferici. Esemplare molto buono, in barbe, intonso, solo leggermente brunito. Prima edizione per la Théorie des Ondes; seconda edizione per la Théorie des vents. Poggendorff I, 1339/40.

First separate printing, in the original wrappers. – Content: The paper contains Planck's derivation of the Fokker-Planck equation, a generalization of Einstein's equation of Brownian Motion. The Fokker–Planck equation arises in a wide variety of natural science, including solid-state physics, quantum optics, chemical physics, theoretical biology and circuit theory. The Fokker–Planck equation was first utilized by Fokker and Planck to describe the Brownian motion of particles. “In statistical mechanics, the Fokker–Planck equation is a partial differential equation that describes the time evolution of the probability density function of the velocity of a particle under the influence of drag forces and random forces, as in Brownian motion” (Wikipedia). – Condition: Wrappers at upper margin of front cover with small publisher's (?) stamp, bottom and top of spine with minimal faults, otherwise fine, uncut copy. – Rarity: APO (1988ff.) and ABPC (1973ff.) record no copy at all at auction.

Brossura coeva. Luigi Palmieri (1807-1896) fu una singolare figura di uomo dalla preparazione si può dire enciclopedica (si laureò in Scienze fisiche e matematiche e in filosofia) e uno scienziato che utilizava per le sue ricerche quasi esclusivamente il metodo sperimentale; negli scritti che ha lasciato descrive i suoi esperimenti, le sue scoperte e le invenzioni. In questa sua pubblicazione troviamo proprio la descrizione di quella che fu una delle sue scoperte di vulcanologia più significative e utili alla storia della scienza: il sismografo elettromagnetico, che agiva attraverso la corrente elettrica, giungendo a registrare, al contrario dei precedenti più rudimentali strumenti, anche le minime oscillazioni del terreno. Di seguito anche la descrizione dell'elettrometro bifiliare. Per molti anni tenne la direzione della Specola meteorologica della città di Napoli e a lungo studiò il Vesuvio, e in questi suoi studi di vulcanologia probabilmente fu il primo che scoprì l'elio sulla Terra.
