1940B352London: Faber and Faber 1940. First. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. Strangers and Brothers is the first volume of what became C.P. Snows 11 novel series of the same name. Published in the early days of WWII it is by far the scarcest volume in the series and dust jackets are extremely scarce. Paper was in very short supply during the war and thus jackets may have only been printed as books sold. One can see from the photos that the publisher resorted to printing the dust jackets for this title on the reverse of leftover dust jackets from other titles in this case a jacket from Perkin the Pedlar by Eleanor Farjeon. The publisher's list of available titles on the back of the jacket includes books not published until 1943 and thus is not an original 1940 jacket but any jacket of the war period is scarce nonetheless.
This copy is near fine in green cloth with red titles on the spine. Slight scuffing at the corners and bumping at the spine ends are the only issues. No other marks or damage at all. The clipped dust jacket has minor soiling and some chipping and small tears at the edges but is overall very good and is still quite bright. FO. Faber and Faber hardcover
1940B618London: Faber and Faber Ltd 1940. First. Hardcover. Good . Strangers and Brothers is the first novel in Snow's 11 novel series Strangers and Brothers but the second book according to the series narrative chronology. It was later published in the US under the title George Passant after the entire series took the title of the first volume.

In the book George Passant is a solicitor in a small English town whose idealism and eccentricity lead him to accumulate a group of young followers in a mentor-like capacity. Narrated by Lewis Eliot the novel has the more general background of Eliot's rising career and the changes in English society through the 20th century.
This copy is good in light blue green cloth with red titles on the spine. The covers show moderate edge wear and sunning primarily at the spine and edges. The corners are slightly bumped. The binding is quite sound although the front free blank endpaper has been cut out perhaps to remove a previous owner's name. There is a light ink name of a previous owner from Cambridge on the front pastedown and a scrawled blue pencil B on the half title page. No other marks or damage.
The book is rather uncommon in this its true first edition published by Faber not to be confused with a later reissued first when Snow changed his publisher to Macmillan.
. 1934B617London: Victor Gollancz Ltd 1934. First. Hardcover. Good. This is C.P. Snow's third novel and his last before he undertook his monumental 11 novel Strangers and Brothers series. The story is told in the first person and begins with a child's interest in the night sky. A telescope starts a lifetime's interest in science. The narrator goes up to King's College London to study. As a fellow at Cambridge he embarks on love affairs and searches for love at the same time as career success. Finally contentment in love exhausts his passion for research.

This copy is good in black cloth with gilt titles on the spine. The covers show moderate wear and the titles on the spine have faded. The endpapers have been renewed and so the binding is quite sound. The page edges are age darkened a bit but the text is very clean and unmarked. No other marks or damage. No DJ. FO. Victor Gollancz Ltd hardcover

1949B572London: Faber and Faber 1949. First. Hardcover. Near fine/Good minus. Time of Hope is the third novel in C. P. Snow's monumental Strangers and Brothers series but first in the series' narrative chronology. It depicts the beginning of Lewis Eliot's life with a childhood in poverty in a small English town at the beginning of the 20th century.

Very good in orange cloth with gilt titles on the spine. The gilt has some fading. The binding is sound but the book leans a bit. The corners are bent and so have compressed the corners of the text as well. The rear cover is dented at the lower spine corner. The unclipped DJ appears from the quality of the paper to be a facsimile and shows just a bit of edge wear. Snow has inscribed the book on the title page. FO. Faber and Faber hardcover
