19271594Cincinnati: The Williamson Heater Company 1927. Staplebound. Color illustrated pictorial wraps. Very good. 17 pages. 23 x 10 cm. Before the clothes dryer as we now know there was a half step improvement for homemakers: a cabinet where one would hang clothes after using the wringer which basically operated like a large hair dryer. The logic was - no hauling the clothes outside in all weather or having unsightly clothes drying all over the house. The downside was they were fairly dangerous and caused electrical fires. Illustrated throughout. Middle pages detached because of rusted staples otherwise clean and bright. Promotional postcard laid in.

The Williamson Heater Company paperback books

193321880New York: Charles Scribner's Sons. Very Good in Very Good dj. 1933. First American Edition. Hardcover. price-clipped moderate shelfwear slight exposure of boards at bottom corners light soiling to top of text block; jacket has a number of tiny tears and edge-nicks small ink stain near bottom corner of rear panel. The author "is writing about love today as it is under the Soviet. And here as in 'Three Pairs of Silk Stockings' the reader secures in addition to a love story perfectly told a clearer and more accurate insight into actual life in Soviet Russia than can be obtained in any other way." The New York Times gave the book a lengthy review calling it "a brilliant psychological novel which does not present a wholly Communist attitude to an eternal problem" -- quite probably the reason why also per the Times the author's books were "more generally and sympathetically read by the Western worn than by Russia." That never changed much and he was so out of favor by the time of his death in 1938 that the Writers' Union didn't even bother to publish an obituary; a 2007 study of Soviet-era satire reported that his books had long since been taken out of circulation and that he'd essentially been obliterated from the country's literary history. .
