pp. vii, 308 + Photographs. 8vo. Original full cloth binding. Original dust jacket with price. Hardbound. Very nice copy. Fifth printing. New and enlarged edition, including statements by the British and Canadian governments. Familiarily known as the "Smyth Report" the first published account of the development of the atom bomb was issued, in mimeographed form for press use, on August 12, 1945, just six days after the first atomic bomb was exploded over Hiroshima. A GPO and a trade edition quickly followed. Smyth, chairman of the Department of Physics at Princeton, gives a remarkably full and candid account of the development of the work carried out by the Manhattan District Project which culminated in the production of the first Atomic Bomb. A lovely clean very tight copy with bright unmarked boards and no bumping to corners. 376pp. Robert Oppenheimer (1904-1967) is one of the few American scientists who have become public and controversial figures in the twentieth century. This book adds a new dimension to the Oppenheimer story by offering a look at the private man behind the public figure. It consists of letters spanning the period from his Harvard student days in 1922 to his departure from Los Alamos in 1945. The letters are supplemented by recollections of those who knew him and by his own recollections from an interview a few years before his death.
230 pages including index and bibliography. "Relates how Canada's electricity giants - Ontario Hydro, Hydro-Quebec, B.C. Hydro and others - have juggled personal power with the public interest." - from dust jacket. Moderate wear. Usual library markings. Nice solid copy. Book
