Vegetarianism can be recorded all the way back to 6th century Greece as Pythagoras could be considered the father of ethical vegetarianism. It is more commonly associated with Eastern beliefs and to this day people of all religions practice this dietary lifestyle. Original blue cloth board with white title on cover and a decorative cheeky quote around the edge; "Do unto others as you would that others should do unto you even though they be four footed and dumb." This vast recipe book opens with a scripture from the Bible stating that "I have given every green herb for meat; and it was so" and a dedication to the authors sister "the first vegetarian I ever knew" Margaret More. Sharpe follows up with a quote from their sister " 'The world needs not so much to be taught as reminded.' " in which Sharpe adds "May this book remind many of the love they owe to every living creature." The recipes cover a range of vegetable legume and herbal dishes some being substitutions for meat and some being original recipes. Some include "Lima Beans Hollandaise" "Corn Creole" "Italian Croquettes" "German Spinach with Rhubarb"" "Parisian Potatoes" and menus for holidays such as Thanksgiving "Cream of Artichokes" "Asparagus in Dutch Butter" and classic pies mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce. An interesting piece of history with a vastly growing populous. Minor foxing on front and end pages sunning to spine and wear to cover quote recipe pages are clean and crisp. Crown 8vo. 7-5/8" x 5-1/8" <br/><br/>The author born in a log cabin in Randolph county near Richmond Indiana to parents who were members of the Society of Friends. Susanna was the eldest of thirteen children was enormously ambitious and at an early age decided on a college education. In 1864 she received a degree from the New York Hygeio-Therapeutic College. In 1870 Dr. Dodds began to practice in St Louis. In this practice she was joined by her husband's sister Dr. Mary Dodds. As physicians the two did much for the physical redemption of women. Dr. S. Dodds became dean of the St. Louis Hygienic College of Physicians and Surgeons as well as a member of its faculty. She published this work in addition to papers in health journals detailing her philosophy of the benefits stemming from a 'hygienic' diet. While not a strictly vegetarian cook-book the author makes no qualms about her preference for non-meat cookery. for example on p. 48 we find her opining "If there is a practice in all of Christendom that deserves the censure of this enlightened age it is that of eating swine's flesh."
