This edition debuted Francis Bacon"s utopian novel "New Atlantis" tucked away toward the end of the book. Also included for the first time "The History of Natural and Experimental of Life and Death or of the Prolongation of Life." Includes also "an Alphabetical Table of the Principal Things contained in the Ten Centuries." Rebound calf with five raised bands on spine and title in gilt. Very good condition. Light rubbing to edges and one two-inch strip of heavier rubbing along spine. Some leather shedding at this place. Binding is solid. Engraved portrait is present and in fine condition as is the engraved pictorial title on facing page. Some pages have light spotting but the spotting doesn't obscure the text or dominate the page in any way. Most pages are clear and unspotted. The paper is very lightly tanned. It has a crinkle as the pages are turned which is very nice. Overall an excellent copy. From the library of noted California mathematician Charles Greenhall with his ownership signature penciled on the first endpage. On the second endpage there are two inked signatures that look of an era as the book: I Newton and B. Newton. Isaac Newton's signature looks different from this one. Bound in original 3/4 leather and green cloth; first prize label fixed to front board. 60 pages of drawings; shapes anatomical studies zoological studies and a portrait of George Washington among the efforts. A fine sketchbook displaying strong skill. Newton was a pioneer in the American automotive industry eventually with the title of president of the Glidden Buick Corporation. An obituary stated that he had sold more automobiles at retail than any other man in the world. At Dartmouth he was a track star winning five U.S. championships and became a two-time Olympian. At the Olympic Games in St. Louis in 1904 Newton medalled in both the Steeplechase and the Marathon. <br/><br/> hardcover

First Edition. The series of engravings illustrating the work include views of Montreal from the Canal the Haymarket the Mountain and St. Helen's Island as well as depictions of the various architectural landmarks of the city Church of Notre Dame Hôtel Dieu Chapel Nelson's Monument Theatre Royal Government House Bank of Montreal &c. They are engraved after drawings by James Duncan 1806-1881 "one of the first of Montreal's historic artists." Lande Spendlove refers to him as "one of Canada's first lithographic draughtsmen" and a "splendid watercolourist". Duncan emigrated to Canada in 1825 settling in Montreal where he became a skilful and successful professional artist lithographer and teacher of drawing. He was a founding member and treasurer of the Montreal Society of Artists and was elected a member of the Society of Canadian Artists at Montreal in 1867 and an associate of the Royal Canadian Academy in 1880. "These illustrations in which architectural detail is reproduced with great exactness are significant because they are among the few remaining original sources of Montreal architecture of the time."
