Otherwise clean and sound in the original dust jacket which has a chip missing from the rear panel. Newton was an English missionary who lived in Palestine for more than four decades. She took an unequivocal anti-Zionist position and devoted both her labors and her considerable financial resources in support of Arab nationalism. This memoir was published in year the British mandate was terminated. "The creation of the state of Israel and the collapse of the Arab cause in Palestine caused her great distress but she kept open house for Arab nationalists in London and continued to use her personal wealth in supporting relief services for Palestinian refugees" ODNB. "Designed to be constructed in the patent cement slab system by W. H. Lascelles." Newton served his apprenticeship in the architectural offices of Richard Norman Shaw from 1873 to 1876 remaining in his offices for three mor years until 1880 before commencing his own successful and prolific practice. According to Hermann Muthesius in The English House 1904 "He is one of th busiest architects in England and therefore represents the good principles of current thinking about the house perhaps its most accessible form." Newton' volume is a companion volume to a book published in 1878 by Richard Norman Sh when Newton was still in Shaw's offices. It also has designs to be constructe in the Lascelles patent cement system and contains 28 plates -- thus explaini the numbering of the plates 29 to 44 in Newton's companion volume. Soiled at spine and edges of boards but otherwise a very good copy of an extremely sca book. unknown books

Slight toning to interior margins but otherwise clean unmarked. Very Good or Better quite rare.<br/><br/>Judging by the chief concern of this self-published poetry book one can infer that Mr. Earl L. Newton must have worked for the U.S. Postal Service in some capacity at some point in his life. Indeed an 1899 issue of The Detroit Free Press notes that a man of that name was appointed to a local railroad post office clerk position. In any case a "nixie box" was what postal workers used to store undeliverable mail and Newton's book contains a number of light-hearted verses on a range of topics but most with the good old "R.P.O" at its core.
