The dictionary which is far more than a dictionary remains an interesting and valuable source of information on birds today even as two later editions have been published Thomson 1964 and Campbell & Lack 1985. The first three volumes bear the signature of Chas. W. Richmond dated 1895. All four volumes are signed by Clarence Cottam dated 1932 and have his bookplate. A first edition of Alfred Newton's illustrated dictionary of birds. The English zoologist and ornithologist helped found the British Ornithologists' Union in 1858 and established its and its quarterly journal a year later. As well as lecturing in Comparative Anatomy at Cambridge University between 1866 and 1907 he was also influential in the Sea Birds Preservation Act 1869 having been inspired by his research of extinct bird species such as the dodo. In the publisher's original green cloth binding. Externally generally smart. Very lightly rubbed to the boards more to the joints. Lightly bumped to the head of the spine more so to the tail. Written by William Yarrell an English zoologist prolific writer and naturalist. Yarrell is best known as the author of 'The History of British Fishes' and 'The History of British Birds' the latter of which went into several editions and was the standard reference work for a generation of British ornithologists. Yarrell's work features a field guide systematically describing every species of bird known to have occurred in Britain throughout history.
