A superb tight and scarce first edition of the first book to bear noted historian Ambrose's name -- here as editor. His first solo title a biography of Henry Halleck was published the following year. Not only that but this lovely copy bears a fine autograph addition: Tipped facing the title page is a Typed Letter Signed from Ambrose 1936-2002 1p 8¼" X 11" Madison WI 2 March 1959. Addressed to noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates 1914-93. Near fine. On letterhead of "The State of Wisconsin State Historical Society" Ambrose tells this long-time officer of the New York Civil War Round Table "I have been asked by the editor of the Wisconsin Magazine of History. to prepare an article on the Civil War Round Tables of the country" and asks Gates "if you will be good enough to help me in my preliminary research by filling out the enclose questionnaire." Boldly signed in full in blue ink. An exceptionally early letter predating by two years Ambrose's first teaching position -- and a handsome first edition of one of his first academic endeavors. His formal education was limited but an interest in books inspired his first collecting effortsin the 1880s. His early working life was haphazard: he began working as a grocery stock boy when he was still in his earlyteens spent a few years as a bookstore clerk tried and disliked banking and eventually joined the Cutter Electrical andManufacturing Company in 1895. Five years later he bought it and became president and remained with the company until hisretirement in 1932…….His interests however lay almost entirely in the realm of book collecting – he claimed nine-tenths of his energies were devotedto his library. He married Babette Edelheim daughter of fellow collector Carl Edelheim in 1890 and socially moved in a circle offellow collectors including Moncure Biddle William Elkins and Christopher Morley. His first book The Amenities of Book-Collecting was published by The Atlantic in 1918. It was an enormous success in the circle of bibliophiles throughout England and America and led Newton to a successful writing and speaking career. Additional books by Newton include A Magnificent Farce and Other Diversions of a Book-Collector 1921 The Greatest Book in the World and Other Papers 1925 This Book-Collecting Game 1928 A Tourist inSpite of Himself 1930 End Papers 1933 Derby Day andOther Adventures 1934 and Bibliography and Pseudo-Bibliography 1936. He also wrote two plays Doctor Johnson 1923 and Mr. Strahan's Dinner Party 1930 andmany brochures privately printed for his friends….He primarily collected British literature and was particularly drawn to Charles Dickens Anthony Trollope and SamuelJohnson. Although he had regular dealings with booksellers in the US and England many of his books came from his fellowPhiladelphian the antiquarian bookseller A. S. W.Rosenbach……Newton and his family lived at their estate Oak Knoll in Daylesford Pennsylvania. After a lingering illness Newton died in 1940 described by the Library of Congress as "the most famous and influential of American book collectors." Hisremarkable collection of rare books was auctioned off by Parke-Bernet in 1941 with his personal papers and his publishedwritings being donated to the Free Library by his son E. Internally tight on lightly-aged and grubby paper and with the reverse of the frontispiece slightly discoloured. Staples a little rusty. In grubby white wraps. A signed presentation copy. A terrific collection of 19 items made up of primarily of the small blue pamphlets with stiff paper wraps that Newton sent out as Christmas presents to friends family and a limited number of subscribers. Also included are three hand-written letters to the owner of the collection Horace B. Hare a close personal friend of Newton's and Pennsylvania neighbor. Hare's wife Mary Ellen nee Cassatt was a niece of painter Mary Cassatt. The pamphlet collection has several items signed and inscribed by Newton. Also included is the important First Edition of Three Songs for St. Cecilia's Day by W.H. Auden The collection comes in a custom made folding box that Newton himself had made for Hare at a binder in London which is the subject of one of the letters and mentioned in another. The box is 3/4 navy morocco over blue cloth covered boards. Titles in gilt. Marbled liner. In generally nice condition however the front hinge is split fully along its length. Still it is holding firm by the liner beneath. All pieces are square tight and clean throughout with little or no wear. One or two have a slight dog-eared corner but very trivial defects. Richardson Frederick. Letter from England to A. Edward Newton. 1940. Another Copy lacking acknowledgment card. Plus three hand-written signed letters two with original envelopes. Two are from December 1934 and discuss the gift from Newton to Hare of the custom made box to hold these pamphlets his "Newtonia". The third letter is dated December 1939 and is an acknowledgment of a gift Newton received from Hare and the hope that they may get together soon. Clearly this was a close association. To conclude this remarkable gathering is a two-page 8.5" x 11" proof on onion skin dated June 1940 of a letter from Newton to be published as a Broadside with a third page written and signed by Newton describing the project and its limitation to 200 copies. The letter "Gives Newton's views on aiding England in the war and reprints an article he mailed to several newspapers titled 'Give Without Counting'". Newton died just two months later.
