Altogether the set includes 127 separate articles. Most were originally published in such well-known outlets of the 1887-1919 period as ZeitschriJt jilr Ethnologie Globus Science Internationales Archiv filr Ethnographie Ethnologisches Notisblatt Mittheilungen der Anthropologischen Gesellschajt in Wien Verojentlichungen aus dem Kdniglichen Museum filr Volkerkunde Berlin and the proceedings of the various International Congresses of Americanists held during these years. Occasionally these articles on being reprinted in the various volumes of Gesammelte Abhundlungen were substantially enlarged and revised by their author. A few of the most important papers were written especially for these volumes such as his well-known translations with copious notes of the Sahaguntine chants to the gods Vol. I his classic account of Tarascan culture at Contact Vol. III and his important descriptions of the ruins of La Quemada Vol. III and Teotihuacan Vol. V. Breaking them down into categories to illustrate again the great breadth of Seler's scholarly labors approximately 10 are devoted to studies of the Mexican codices 3 to Mexican calendrics 20 to Maya hieroglyphic writing and calendrics 3 to mythology 2 to general Mesoamerican linguistics 29 to analyses of archaeological objects or groups of objects 13 to descriptions always well illustrated of major ruins 6 to accounts of archaeological travels 14 to what might be called "general ethnohistory" 4 to direct translations of Nahuatl texts 3 to recent ethnography 3 to Conquest history I to geography and 4 on miscellaneous topics. In addition to this coverage of Mesoamerican matters which consumes the vast bulk of the volumes 4 articles deal with North America 3 with Central America and 5 with South America Andean region. The small number of articles specifically concerned with Mexican codices does not accurately reflect Seler's contribution to this field since as stated above his major works here were long monographs each thoroughly analyzing a major surviving specimen. American Anthropologist Volume 65: p1100 Seler was born in Crossen an der Oder Prussia on December 5 1849; attended Joachimsthalsche Gymnasium Berlin 1863-1869; attended University of Breslau before serving a year of military duty in 1870-71 during the Franco-Prussian War; returned to his studies at University of Berlin in 1871 and passed his Oberlehrer examination in 1875; taught science and mathematics until he was forced to resign because of poor health in 1879; moved to Trieste and began studying linguistics and his interest in Pre-Columbian ethnography and archeology emerged; received his doctorate University of Leipzig 1887; director American Division KÃ¶niglichen Museum fÃ¼r VÃ¶lkerkunde in Berlin 1904-22; his published papers and monographs made fundamental contributions to studies of aboriginal American linguistics archaeology native history and ethnography; died in 1922. Compiled and re-impression under the direction of Antonio Penafiel. Inscribed by Penafiel. First published in 1559. Second edition limited to 200 copies of which this is number 5. When the Franciscans arrived in Michoacan in 1525 they found a new challenge the language of the natives of the region whom they came to call Tarascans was different from other native languages of New Spain. Maturino Gilberti a Franciscan friar whose skills in the Tarascan language exceeded those of their peers. When his works were printed it was the first attempt of a systematic analysis of the language and his vocabulary is still the best known Tarascan dictionary. Prior to his arrival in the new world very little is know it is thought that he may have been born in 1498. but it could have been in 1507 or 8 in the city of Poitiers France. He studied arts and theology at the University of Toulouse and came to New Spain in 1531 shortly after his ordination. Fray Alonso de la Rea Michoacan's Franciscan chronicler of the seventeenth century says Gilberti went directly to Michoacan. He quickly learned the language and was held in high admiration by the natives. It seems that his first publication was a Christian doctrine that came out in 1553. In 1556 we find Fray Gilberti in Tzintzuntzan were Quiroga established the episcopal see and where indigenous Tzintzuntzans and other subjected Indians were forced in building the cathedral. Gilberti stood against Bishop Quiroga and the enslavement of the indigenous to build and pay for the cathedral. In the summer of 1558 Gilberti proposed several books to be printed in Mexico. He Had obtained approval for them by James Daciano guardian superior of the conventof the Franciscans in Tzintzuntzan in July. He must have acted quickly because on August 10 received letters from Archbishop Alonso and the Franciscan provincial authorizing the publication of his books. Within the same twelve month period the Viceroy Luis de Velasco gave his written approval. In accordance with such approvals he would published four books in Mexico during the course of less than one year. All were published at the press of Juan Pablo. It seems that Gilberti had thought that his grammar Arte and dictionary vocabulary were two parts of the same work. This is probably the reason why the dictionary does not have the usual written approvals because the dictionary is mentioned in the letters to the principle of grammar. Gilberti died in Tzintzuntzan 1585. Condition: Inscribed on half title spine hinges edges and corners rubbed corners bumped. Internally very good in good binding. Diccionario Grande De La Lengua De Michoacan

1991A000852 volumes: 704 pages with tables; 848 pages. Octavo 9" x 6 3/4" bound in original wrappers. Compiled by Warren J Benedict. First edition limited to 500 copies. In the fall of 1965 Warren found in the John Carter Brown Library a very incomplete manuscript dictionary of the Tarascan language. In the catalog of the library it was indicated as a work of Father Gilberti who first publish the grammar 1558 and dictionary 1559 of the language. But the manuscript dictionary was very different than that of the dictionary published by Gilberti. Warren considered copying the document but because of the poor physical condition of the manuscript decided against doing so. In 1977 when Warren began to investigate further the life and writings of Brother Mathurin Gilberti he found in a bibliographic directory a quotation from a manuscript in the Latin American Library at Tulane indicating that it was a "Vocabulary Castilian-Tarasco-Tarasco and Castilian" written by Brother Gilberti. When asked about the content of the manuscript he was assured that the manuscript was published as the Gilberti vocabulary. He found that not only was it different in many ways from the published vocabulary of Gilbert but was a full version of which the dictionary of which the manuscript of the John Carter Brown contained only the last part. Since the manuscript in the Tulane library was completely legible and without major flaws it was possible to begin serious editorial work. So Warren called the manuscript of Tulane Text A. It consists of two parts: the Spanish-Tarasco part which has 130 leaves and the Tarasco-Spanish Part of 150 leaves. There was a note by the famous Mexican bibliophile NicolÃ¡s LeÃ³n indicating the provenance of the manuscript. This manuscript was an unpublished document in the hand of Father Gilberti. This vocabulary was produced after the one printed in Mexico in 1559 and therefore more copious and corrected. It was found among the books belonging to Mendoza in Guadalajara 1913 and bought in the Archdiocese. With the stamp on the title page is the "Sociedad Mexicana de GeografÃa y EstadÃstica"; but it is believed that it was part of Mendoza's collection because no files appear in the receipt proving that it had been donated in 1913 noted by Leon. Having satisfied his conscience Leon sold the manuscript to William Gates who in turn sold several photographic prints which are cited in the Newberry Library the Peabody Library and the Library of Congress. In 1924 Tulane bought the collection. The binding of the manuscript has a stamp of "Gates Collection" on the back of the cover. The original manuscript is written throughout in the same hand but has corrections and additions between the lines. Many of them are the original scribe but there are also many additions in another hand especially at the beginning of the Spanish-Tarasco part which may conflict sharply with the original. The manuscript of the John Carter Brown Library here called the Type B consisting of 148 leaves. This work is the compilation of all this material. Condition: Lightly soiled with gently bumped corners and light edge wear else a very good copy. Fimax Publicistas paperback books
