The equally rare first edition published by Bieling in Nürnberg in 1810 contains the plates from Johann Sigmund Stoy Bilder-Akademie für die Jugend 1784 while the illustrations in present anonymous edition are printed from new plates implying a possible pirated edition.It treats the Khoikhoi the inhabitants of Guinea the Caribbean Florida and Mexico the Eskimos the inhabitants of Greenland and Patagonia the "Pescherans" from Tierra del Fuego the inhabitants of New Zealand the Australian aboriginies called "New Hollanders" the inhabitants of Java and Amboina & Makassar the Moguls in India the inhabitants of Bukhara and China the Kalmyks Mongols and Buryatians the inhabitants of Tunguska and Kamchatka the Ostyaks the Samoyedic peoples and the Laplanders. Sabin 118 A reissue of the 1588 edition.<br /><br />Jose de Acosta September/October 1539 - February 15 1600 was a Spanish 16th-century Jesuit missionary and naturalist in Latin America. Born at Medina del Campo in Spain he became a novice in the Society of Jesus at the age of thirteen at the place of his birth. Four of his brothers successively joined the same order. Before leaving Spain he was lecturer in theology at Ocana and in April 1569 was sent to Lima Peru where the Jesuits had been established in the proceeding year. At Lima Acosta again occupied the chair of theology; his fame as an orator had preceded him. In 1571 he went to Cuzco as a visitor of the college of the Jesuits then recently founded. Returning to Lima three years later to again fill the chair of theology he was elected provincial in 1576. He founded a number of colleges among them those of Arequipa Potosi Chuquisaca Panama and La Paz but met with considerable opposition from the viceroy Francisco de Toledo Count of Oropesa. His official duties obliged him to investigate personally a very extensive range of territory so that he acquired a practical knowledge of the vast province and of its aboriginal inhabitants. At the provincial council of 1582 at Lima Acosta played a very important part. Called to Spain by the King in 1585 he was detained in Mexico where he dedicated himself to studies of the country and people; returning to Europe he filled the chair of theology at the Roman college in 1594 as well as other important positions. At the time of his death he was rector of the college at Salamanca. Aside from his publication of the proceedings of the provincial councils of 1567 and 1583 and several works of exclusively theological import Acosta is best known as the writer of <i>De Natura Novi Orbis De promulgatione Evangelii apud Barbaros sive De Procuranda Indorum salute</i> and above all the <i>Historia natural y moral de las Indias</i>. The first two appeared at Salamanca in 1588 the last at Seville in 1590 and soon after its publication translated into various languages. It is chiefly the <i>Historia natural y moral</i> that has established the reputation of Acosta. In a form more concise than that employed by his predecessors Francisco Lopez de Gomara and Oviedo he treated the natural and philosophic history of the New World from a broader point of view. In it more than a century before Europeans learned of the Bering Strait Acosta hypothesized that Latin America's indigenous peoples had migrated from Asia to Latin America. He also divided them into three barbarian categories. Frank Hamilton Cushing was an ethnologist and anthropologist who helped pioneer the practice of participant observation by living among Zuni in New Mexico. He joined James Stevenson's anthropological expedition to New Mexico undertaken by the United States Bureau of Ethnography in 1879. Enthralled by Zuni culture he lived with the Zuni from 1879 until a scandal related to his advocacy work forced him to return to Washington in 1884. <br /> <br /> John K. Hillers the German-born photographer of the American West was a photographer for the Bureau of American Ethnography from 1879-1881 during which time he took this picture of Cushing in Zuni dress. Cushing - we think - has inscribed the photograph on the verso as follows: "Tenatsali / Medicine Flower of the Spaces / Younger Priesthood of the Bow / War Chief of Zuni / Adopted American Name /Frank Hamilton Cushing. Originally inhabitants of much of the state of Chihuahua the Rarámuri retreated to the high sierras and canyons such as the Copper Canyon in the Sierra Madre Occidental on the arrival of Spanish explorers in the sixteenth century. The area of the Sierra Madre Occidental which they now inhabit is often called the Sierra Tarahumara because of their presence. The Tarahumara language belongs to the Uto-Aztecan family. Although it is in decline under pressure from Spanish it is still widely spoken.<br /><br />Miguel Tellechea was a missionary to the Tarahumara Indians of the northern part of Mexico. Besides the description of his travels throughout the West the book contains hundreds of line drawings of southern and western Indians as well as two significant maps showing the locations of Indian tribes. Catlin first went west in 1830 travelling extensively for the next six years accumulating his "Indian Gallery." Letters and Notes includes hundreds of engravings which were reduced from the original paintings under Catlin's supervision. The text and illustrations portray diverse aspects of Indian life including village scenes games dances funerals sudatories religious ceremonies buffalo hunting etc. plus detailed descriptions and depictions of native dress and custom. After taking the entire gallery of his paintings to England Catlin published his "Letters & Notes" using text from a series of articles he had written for the New York Commercial Advertiser from 1832 to 1837 and illustrating it with line-cut reductions of his original paintings. Compiled and re-impression under the direction of Antonio Penafiel. Inscribed by Penafiel. First published in 1559. Second edition limited to 200 copies of which this is number 5.<br /><br />When the Franciscans arrived in Michoacan in 1525 they found a new challenge the language of the natives of the region whom they came to call Tarascans was different from other native languages of New Spain. Maturino Gilberti a Franciscan friar whose skills in the Tarascan language exceeded those of their peers. When his works were printed it was the first attempt of a systematic analysis of the language and his vocabulary is still the best known Tarascan dictionary. Prior to his arrival in the new world very little is know it is thought that he may have been born in 1498. but it could have been in 1507 or 8 in the city of Poitiers France. He studied arts and theology at the University of Toulouse and came to New Spain in 1531 shortly after his ordination. Fray Alonso de la Rea Michoacan's Franciscan chronicler of the seventeenth century says Gilberti went directly to Michoacan. He quickly learned the language and was held in high admiration by the natives. It seems that his first publication was a <i>Christian doctrine</i> that came out in 1553. In 1556 we find Fray Gilberti in Tzintzuntzan were Quiroga established the episcopal see and where indigenous Tzintzuntzans and other subjected Indians were forced in building the cathedral. Gilberti stood against Bishop Quiroga and the enslavement of the indigenous to build and pay for the cathedral. In the summer of 1558 Gilberti proposed several books to be printed in Mexico. He Had obtained approval for them by James Daciano guardian superior of the conventof the Franciscans in Tzintzuntzan in July. He must have acted quickly because on August 10 received letters from Archbishop Alonso and the Franciscan provincial authorizing the publication of his books. Within the same twelve month period the Viceroy Luis de Velasco gave his written approval. In accordance with such approvals he would published four books in Mexico during the course of less than one year. All were published at the press of Juan Pablo. It seems that Gilberti had thought that his grammar <i>Arte</i> and <i>dictionary</i> <i>vocabulary</i> were two parts of the same work. This is probably the reason why the dictionary does not have the usual written approvals because the dictionary is mentioned in the letters to the principle of grammar. Gilberti died in Tzintzuntzan 1585.<br /><br /><b>Condition:</b><br /><br />Inscribed on half title spine hinges edges and corners rubbed corners bumped. Internally very good in good binding. This is a remarkably well preserved copy of the 1899 edition limited to 560 copies. Near Fine condition. Square and tight. SEE PHOTOS. Unusual for this very heavy book hinges -- both inner and outer -- remain in excellent condition. Sharp corners. Page are creamy white unmarked with NO foxing. This pioneering anthropological work features 141 collotype plates after photos by Charles B. Lang and Bedros Tartarian. Among the tribes photographed are the Zapotec Mixe Tehauntepecano Juave Otomi Tarascan Aztec Tlaxcalan Mixtec Triqui Chontal and Cuicatec. To obtain these photos Starr traveled throughout the Mexican states of Puebla Tlaxcala Michoacan and Oaxaca measuring modeling sculptures and photographing. The plates feature portraits of each subject front and side views images of typical daily life and activities group shots with full length figures in native dress views of villages and environs etc. The photographic reproductions are full page -- measuring 8.5" tall by 11" wide -- all in FINE condition with exceptional detail and rich tonality. The printed limitation page in this copy is not numbered or author signed. The front free endpaper is signed by Wilberforce Eames as "W. Eames" SEE PHOTOS. Two downloads of his autograph are laid in for authentication. The American bibliographer and librarian Wilberforce Eames 1855 - 1937 is known as the "Dean of American bibliographers." Eames compiled many bibliographies and bibliographical references including major contributions to Joseph Sabin's DICTIONARY OF BOOKS RELATING TO AMERICA. From Wikipedia: "He became an assistant librarian and eventually a full librarian at Lenox and later upon the merging of the Tilden trust Astor and Lenox libraries he was appointed 'Lenox Librarian.' He became Chief of the American History Division at the New York Public Library in 1911 and Bibliographer a position he held until his death there in 1916. In 1924 The New York Times called Eames: "The greatest living scholar of books in America." A. S. W.
