First edition. <br /><br />A few general observations on the contents of Gesammelte Abhandlungen are in order. Altogether the set includes 127 separate articles. Most were originally published in such well-known outlets of the 1887-1919 period as <em>ZeitschriJt jilr Ethnologie Globus Science Internationales Archiv filr Ethnographie Ethnologisches Notisblatt Mittheilungen der Anthropologischen Gesellschajt in Wien Verojentlichungen aus dem Kdniglichen Museum filr Volkerkunde</em> Berlin and the proceedings of the various International Congresses of Americanists held during these years. Occasionally these articles on being reprinted in the various volumes of <em>Gesammelte Abhundlungen</em> were substantially enlarged and revised by their author.</p><p>A few of the most important papers were written especially for these volumes such as his well-known translations with copious notes of the Sahaguntine chants to the gods Vol. I his classic account of Tarascan culture at Contact Vol. III and his important descriptions of the ruins of La Quemada Vol. III and Teotihuacan Vol. V. Breaking them down into categories to illustrate again the great breadth of Seler's scholarly labors approximately 10 are devoted to studies of the Mexican codices 3 to Mexican calendrics 20 to Maya hieroglyphic writing and calendrics 3 to mythology 2 to general Mesoamerican linguistics 29 to analyses of archaeological objects or groups of objects 13 to descriptions always well illustrated of major ruins 6 to accounts of archaeological travels 14 to what might be called "general ethnohistory" 4 to direct translations of Nahuatl texts 3 to recent ethnography 3 to Conquest history I to geography and 4 on miscellaneous topics. In addition to this coverage of Mesoamerican matters which consumes the vast bulk of the volumes 4 articles deal with North America 3 with Central America and 5 with South America Andean region. The small number of articles specifically concerned with Mexican codices does not accurately reflect Seler's contribution to this field since as stated above his major works here were long monographs each thoroughly analyzing a major surviving specimen. American Anthropologist Volume 65: p1100<br /><br />Seler was born in Crossen an der Oder Prussia on December 5 1849; attended Joachimsthalsche Gymnasium Berlin 1863-1869; attended University of Breslau before serving a year of military duty in 1870-71 during the Franco-Prussian War; returned to his studies at University of Berlin in 1871 and passed his Oberlehrer examination in 1875; taught science and mathematics until he was forced to resign because of poor health in 1879; moved to Trieste and began studying linguistics and his interest in Pre-Columbian ethnography and archeology emerged; received his doctorate University of Leipzig 1887; director American Division Königlichen Museum für Völkerkunde in Berlin 1904-22; his published papers and monographs made fundamental contributions to studies of aboriginal American linguistics archaeology native history and ethnography; died in 1922. <br /><br /><strong>Condition: </strong>Corners bumped and rubbed bookplate on front pastedowns spines lightly rubbed. Compiled and re-impression under the direction of Antonio Penafiel. Inscribed by Penafiel. First published in 1559. Second edition limited to 200 copies of which this is number 5.<br /><br />When the Franciscans arrived in Michoacan in 1525 they found a new challenge the language of the natives of the region whom they came to call Tarascans was different from other native languages of New Spain. Maturino Gilberti a Franciscan friar whose skills in the Tarascan language exceeded those of their peers. When his works were printed it was the first attempt of a systematic analysis of the language and his vocabulary is still the best known Tarascan dictionary. Prior to his arrival in the new world very little is know it is thought that he may have been born in 1498. but it could have been in 1507 or 8 in the city of Poitiers France. He studied arts and theology at the University of Toulouse and came to New Spain in 1531 shortly after his ordination. Fray Alonso de la Rea Michoacan's Franciscan chronicler of the seventeenth century says Gilberti went directly to Michoacan. He quickly learned the language and was held in high admiration by the natives. It seems that his first publication was a <i>Christian doctrine</i> that came out in 1553. In 1556 we find Fray Gilberti in Tzintzuntzan were Quiroga established the episcopal see and where indigenous Tzintzuntzans and other subjected Indians were forced in building the cathedral. Gilberti stood against Bishop Quiroga and the enslavement of the indigenous to build and pay for the cathedral. In the summer of 1558 Gilberti proposed several books to be printed in Mexico. He Had obtained approval for them by James Daciano guardian superior of the conventof the Franciscans in Tzintzuntzan in July. He must have acted quickly because on August 10 received letters from Archbishop Alonso and the Franciscan provincial authorizing the publication of his books. Within the same twelve month period the Viceroy Luis de Velasco gave his written approval. In accordance with such approvals he would published four books in Mexico during the course of less than one year. All were published at the press of Juan Pablo. It seems that Gilberti had thought that his grammar <i>Arte</i> and <i>dictionary</i> <i>vocabulary</i> were two parts of the same work. This is probably the reason why the dictionary does not have the usual written approvals because the dictionary is mentioned in the letters to the principle of grammar. Gilberti died in Tzintzuntzan 1585.<br /><br /><b>Condition:</b><br /><br />Inscribed on half title spine hinges edges and corners rubbed corners bumped. Internally very good in good binding. He studied at the National Preparatory School and later at the National Museum of Archaeology Ethnography and History. In the National Autonomous University of Mexico UNAM worked as chief investigator in the Mezquital Valley Hidalgo state and then as director of the Institute for Social Research. He worked for the National Polytechnic Institute and head of the Laboratory of Anthropology and later became director of the Institute of Economic Research. During the administration of President Lazaro Cardenas 1934-1940 he served as advisor to the Department of Indian Affairs and director of the Workers' University. His work scattered in journals was published in six volumes under the title Collected Works 1946. He also published An Essay on the American native civilizations The Nahua chronology The evolution of the indigenous cultures of Mexico and the division of labor The evolution of northwestern Mexico Mining and Mexican metallurgy Four problems of indigenous and Agricultural developments Mezquital Valley among others. Kemper born in San Diego California on November 21 1945 resided in Dallas Texas where he was Professor of Anthropology at Southern Methodist University. He received his Ph.D. in Anthropology in 1971 from the University of California at Berkeley and spent the academic year 1971-1972 there as a National Endowment for the Humanities Post-Doctoral Fellow in Mexican American Studies before joining the SMU faculty. At SMU he served as Chair of the Department of Anthropology President of the Faculty Senate and member of the University Board of Trustees. His research interests included migration and urbanization history of anthropology community development tourism Mexico and the United States. His numerous publications include Anthropologists in Cities 1974 Migration and Adaptation: Tzintzuntzan Peasants in Mexico City 1977 Migration Across Frontiers: Mexico and the United States 1979 Chronicling Cultures: Long-Term Field Research in Anthropology 2002 and Urban Life 5th ed. 2010. Second edition. .<br /><br />Cecilio A Robelo 1839 - 1916 was an attorney by trade but passionately interested in the archaeology of Mexico and the foremost nahuatlato of his day. He was the first director of the Museum of Archaeology. This dictionary first published in parts in the Anales of the Museo 1905 & 08 was a ground-breaking undertaking matching the gods and goddesses of the Aztecs to their representations in the codices and archaeological remains. The volume is well illustrated for that reason although he did not manage to go beyond the letter "q" in this work: later editions by other hands have completed the work. <br /><br />George McClelland Foster Jr born in Sioux Falls South Dakota on October 9 1913 died on May 18 2006 at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California Berkeley where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979 when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics including acculturation long-term fieldwork peasant economies pottery making public health social structure symbolic systems technological change theories of illness and wellness humoral medicine in Latin America and worldview. The quantity quality and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. Virtually all of his major publications have been reprinted and/or translated.
