Eppure, malgrado il proliferare degli studi in materia, tuttora si stenta a ricostruirne le origini, l'evoluzione e i modi di diffusione. Perché mai la fiaba esercita da sempre un fascino irresistibile, quale che sia la forma o il mezzo attraverso cui giunge fino a noi? Uno dei massimi studiosi a livello internazionale propone in queste pagine un originale approccio allo studio della fiaba, nel tentativo di spiegare le ragioni del suo inesauribile propagarsi, fino a diventare parte essenziale delle culture di tutto il mondo, duttile al punto da prestarsi a continue reinvenzioni e ri-creazioni. Attingendo alle scienze sociali e naturali, non meno che a quelle cognitive, alla psicologia evolutiva e alla biologia, Zipes rintraccia le origini della tradizione orale della fiaba nell'antichità, e ricostruisce la sua evoluzione dapprima nel passaggio alla scrittura e alla stampa, e via via attraverso i continui adattamenti ai nuovi mezzi di comunicazione, dal teatro al cinema, dalla tv all'animazione. In questo percorso un ruolo, spesso dimenticato, hanno avuto le donne: sia le tante raccoglitrici e narratrici di storie, sia i personaggi femminili che di queste storie, non a caso, sono protagoniste.
