Original typescript paper for the XVth International Congress of Sociology held at Istanbul in 1952: "Impact of modern life on the fundamentals of tribal culture of Eastern India" signed 'Tarak Ch. Das' with autograph signature by Das. Folio. .345 x 22 cm. In English. 50 p. text in 25 p. It's written on the last page 'Basilmistir' i.e. It's printed. Some autograph corrections on text. Tarak Chandra Das was an anthropologist of Calcutta University. He did his Masters' from Calcutta University in 'Ancient Indian History and Culture' and joined the then newly founded Department of Anthropology at Calcutta University the first Department of Anthropology in India in 1921 as a research scholar and then he became lecturer in 1923 and finally retired as a Reader from the Department in 1963. Das conducted extensive fieldworks in Chotanagpur in the then Bihar and in Assam. Das was interested in the application of Anthropology. In 1941 he delivered the Sectional Presidential address in the Anthropology Section of the Indian Science Congress on the 'Cultural Anthropology in the Service of the Individual and the Nation'. In the address Das elaborately charted out the future path of Indian anthropology with a description of the social dynamics of the tribal and peasant societies in India in the context of the role of anthropologists in nation building. Two books written by T.C. Das bears testimony of his observation and collection of data through anthropological fieldwork. One is his monograph on the Purum Kuki tribe of north-eastern India. and the other is on the Great Bengal Famine during the Second World War.Bengal famine 1943:As revealed in a survey of the destitutes of Calcutta1949. Both the books were published by the University of Calcutta. Northeast India provided windows for Das in his applied anthropological approach towards nation building. The Purum monograph was one of the most comprehensive works produced by an anthropologist on the life of a small tribe and it became a major source of data for a number of world-renowned social anthropologists of Great Britain and USA in later years. The book on the famine of Bengal which took place in 1943 was a unique and rare first-hand study done by any anthropologist or social scientist on the victims of one of the greatest tragedies of India under the colonial rule. An earlier version of the book was discussed in the then British Parliament and some of the recommendations advanced by Das were adopted by the Famine Inquiry Commission in 1944 formed by the colonial government for the prevention of future famines in India. The Nobel Laureate economist Amartya Sen cited Das's original work in his famous book Poverty and Famines. Throughout the book one finds description by Das wherein dry quantitative datagraphs and tables were made alive with human stories of 'grim struggles between hunger and finer sentiments of love affection and kindness'. Das had conducted intensive fieldwork among three tribes in eastern India viz. Ho Kharia and Bhumij during 1927-31 and had shown how these tribes maintained their sociocultural identities. Apart from his success as an ethnographerDas was also an armchair anthropologist. His studies on culture around fish in Bengal museums and dowry restriction law provided examples of his keen interest in dealing with archival materials and written texts in social anthropological and sociological studies. There is very light creasing to the top left corner of the letterhead. Folded twice for mailing. Near fine. <p>Linton writes to Harold Rugg of Columbia University's Teachers College gladly accepting an invitation to take part in one of Rugg's lunch-time forums at the college. "As regards what subject to address I think perhaps the most interesting material that I could give would be a report on recent developments in studies of personality and culture; I am still deep in this work and have come a good way from the time when I was working with Kardiner."<p>Abram Kardiner 1891-1981 was a psychiatrist and pioneering psychoanalyst who made major contributions to psychological and psychoanalytic anthropology.<p>Ralph Linton 1893-1953 was a respected American anthropologist particularly remembered for his texts "The Study of Man" 1936 and "The Tree of Culture" 1955. One of his major contributions to anthropology was defining a distinction between status and role.<p>Harold Rugg 1886-1960 was an educational reformer associated with the Progressive education movement. Originally trained in civil engineering he went on to study psychology sociology and education at the University of Illinois. After teaching at the University of Chicago from 1915 to 1920 he took a job at the Teachers College of Columbia University where he stayed until he retired in 1951. There is light creasing to the top & bottom edges of the letter with a paperclip mark to the top edge. The recipient has heavily marked the letter with a phone number and date & with brackets around the body of the letter and Powdermaker's signature. Folded 3 times for mailing. Good. <p>Powdermaker writes that she will be be happy to speak at Rugg's All-College Luncheon Forum. "Would you like me to talk about the 'Relationship of Hollywood to American Life' or 'The Relationship of Movies to American Life'" or something else"<p>Hortense Powdermaker 1900-1970 was an American anthropologist best known for her ethnographic studies of African Americans in Indianola Mississippi and of Hollywood. After studying at Goucher College and working as a labor organizer for the Amalgamated Clothing Workers she left the United States to study at the London School of Economics. While at LSE she worked under and was influenced by several well-known anthropologists including Bronislaw Malinowski who persuaded her to pursue doctoral studies. She completed her Ph.D. on "Leadership in Primitive Society" in 1928. Returning to the United States she was given an appointment at the new Yale Institute of Public Relations. The institute's director Edward Sapir encouraged her to apply ethnographic field methods to the study of communities in her own society. As a result she conducted anthropological field work in an Indianola African American community recording this work in "After Freedom: A Cultural Study in the Deep South" 1939. Her other best known book "Hollywood the Dream Factory" 1950 was written while she was working at Queens College where she founded the departments of Anthropology and Sociology during a career spanning three decades.<p>One of the best-known educators during the Progressive era of education Harold Rugg 1886-1960 was a professor of education at Teachers College of Columbia University. A Civil Engineer he had become interested in how students learn and pursued a doctorate in education.
