The fire which broke out in the commercial district and rapidly spread through Colón's densely packed wooden buildings destroyed much of the city's historic core. Several of the images in this archive capture the conflagration itself: nighttime exposures show buildings engulfed in flames with thick smoke billowing skyward and firefighting efforts visibly overwhelmed. Other photos reveal the skeletal remains of businesses and residences twisted signage and storefronts reduced to charred shells.
