"It is proposed to establish a Company to be called "The Leicestershire Fire Insurance Company" which shall have for its object the grating Policies of Insurance from loss by Fire in any part of Great Britain though it is not disguised that the support mainly looked for in the first instance is that of the County of Leicester and the adjacent districts." Phoenix House located at the bottom of New Walk is the oldest surviving fire station in Leicester. It was built in 1842 for the Leicestershire Fire Insurance Company. It was designed by William Flint in the Greek Revival style of architecture complete with fluted Ionic columns flanking a central entrance.
