Winslow was a prolific writer on psychiatric topics, he published this work that was an endeavor to demonstrate that most suicides are not criminal, but are victims of mental disease. He was one of the pioneers of the humane system of treatment in insane asylums, and a prime mover in the establishment of the insanity plea in criminal defence. "He was regarded by the public as an authority in cases of insanity, and in 1847 opened two private lunatic asylums at Hammersmith, where he employed the humane method of treating lunatics which is now universal, but was then regarded as on its trial." - DNB. Da quando l'uomo primitivo guarì le proprie ferite applicandovi istintivamente un cataplasma di foglie, la fitoterapia si è sviluppata nei secoli fino ai giorni nostri, quando le scoperte della chimica hanno confermato le intuizioni degli erboristi e non hanno soppiantato i metodi di cura a base di erbe, che coadiuvano con le loro preziose risorse l'opera del medico. Il nostro libro, fra i tanti comparsi anche recentemente su un argomento così importante, si propone alcuni scopi fondamentali. Con un testo dal linguaggio volutamente semplice e chiaro, abbondanza di dati e struttura agevole, vogliamo invitare il Lettore a scoprire i ricchi doni che la natura ci offre per la nostra salute. Le erbe, i fiori e i frutti non sono solo un fattore estetico, che appaga l'occhio e rasserena l'animo con i delicati colori, i deliziosi profumi, gli appetitosi sapori. La flora ci offre soprattutto le sue virtù segrete e preziose, i succhi delle sue mille erbe che alleviano ogni nostro male, ogni esigenza di salute. È difficile diventare autentici erboristi, non ci si improvvisa cercatori e distillatori d'erbe. Di ogni pianta forniamo la descrizione particolare, ma suggeriamo al Lettore che desideri seguire le terapie da noi elaborate e divulgate di rivolgersi con tutta fiducia all'erborista, che gli offrirà volentieri consigli e collaborazione. Abbiamo diviso il volume in due parti fondamentali; nella prima si presentano le piante (scelte fra le più diffuse e reperibili in Italia), nella seconda si trattano più propriamente le varie malattie che tali piante possono aiutare a guarire. Molto importante è questo punto: non vogliamo illudere nessuno, rivelando la formula magica e offrendo la polverina contro tutti i mali: le erbe hanno reali preziosissime virtù terapeutiche, ma non fanno miracoli. Molte malattie, purtroppo assai diffuse, si risolvono solo con un tempestivo intervento del medico, del chirurgo, a cui non bisogna aver paura di rivolgersi con fiducia e con urgenza al primo sintomo di ogni male. Abbiamo infatti trattato solo le malattie in cui la fitoterapia si rivela veramente utile, sottolineando la necessità del controllo medico. D'altra parte, potremmo fare un lungo elenco di mali per cui i decotti e le tisane hanno una indiscussa efficacia pari a quella delle medicine in commercio, senza provocare gli effetti tossici secondari che spesso cachet, pillole lassative e farmaci calmanti producono nel nostro organismo.
