189071937N.p.: Liberty Brand 1890. Stereo view card measuring 7 x 3 1/2 inches. Showing the Bierstadt photographers party at Yosemite Falls in 1870 a later printing. This view is a it unusual as it shows not just the party but has Charles Bierstadt standing in the foreground. Other members pack animals and scenery in the background. Minor wear to left had edge of mount. Very good.Charles Bierstadt was the older brother of the famed landscape painter Albert Bierstadt. At fifteen years of age he began his apprenticeship at cabinetmaking and during his six years of service he spent some time in the study of photography in which in 1856 he and his other brother Edward made numerous trials and experiments which proved successful and then they established themselves in business as photographers. In 1863 Bierstadt moved his business to Niagara Falls New York. He was an expert in stereoscopic views and had in connection with his manufactory a large bazaar where his views and many relics and curios were displayed to advantage. In 1870 he visited California and photographed Yosemite. Liberty Brand unknown

Laid in is a newspaper clipping of :The Campus from the Air" and a typed poem "Welcome Song" referencing Ryland Hall. Superb photography illustrating a sparse campus with little to suggest that the university would eventually contribute to the very identity of Seattle. Now housed in a clear removable archival sleeve with an acid-free backing. University Book Store unknown
