A FINE LITHOGRAPHED MEDINA Medina al-Munawwara ali sâhibhâ afzal al-tahiyya. It shows Medina city with its building and walls besides its environment. Medina is the capital of the Al-Madinah Region in Saudi Arabia. At the city's heart is al-Masjid an-Nabawi 'The Prophet's Mosque' which is the burial place of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Medina is one of the three holiest cities in Islam the other two being Mecca and Jerusalem. Medina was Muhammad's destination in his Hijrah migration from Makkah and became the capital of a rapidly increasing Muslim Empire under Muhammad's leadership serving as the power base of Islam and where Muhammad's Ummah Community composed of both locals and immigrants from Muhammad's original home of Mecca developed. Medina is home to three prominent mosques namely al-Masjid an-Nabawi Quba Mosque and Masjid al-Qiblatayn 'The mosque of the two Qiblas'. Muslims believe that the chronologically final surahs of the Quran were revealed to Muhammad in Medina and are called Medinan surahs in contrast to the earlier Meccan surahs.

N. p. 34729Ottawa. Published byWilliam S. Hunter. 1855. 25.5x 33.5cm sepia tone lithograph by J.H.Buffords Litho. Boston fine. One of the best views in this Ottawaseries. Buffords fame came mainly as the printer of the Currier Ivesprints. Homer Winslow 1836-1910. "Probably the first book to includelithographs drawn by Winslow Homer who was apprenticed to Bufford's ofBoston at the relatively late age of eighteen for a period of two years. The present work includes the apprentice's first substantial published lithograph the third plate View of the Locks Entrance of Rideau Canalwhich is initialed by Homer and the large title vignette and five otherplates that are attributable to him on grounds of style". Tatham suggeststhat "Interests seeking Ottawa's selection as the nation's Capitol mayhave been behind it or The Ottawa and Prescott Railway which linked thetown to Montreal might have funded it in an attempt to encouragetourism. 186410253New York: the photographer; John D. Chase Optician 1864. Albumen silver print stereograph 8.5 x 17.5 cm. Two prints mounted on card. The photographer is identified in a copyright registration statement. "The New England Kitchen" in The Brooklyn & Long Island Sanitary Fair February 22 1864 pages 72-78 states that this demonstration kitchen not of contemporary cooking methods but of old fashioned hearth cooking was a hit with the crowds at the fair and a significant financial success. An experiment in cooking education by example The New England Kitchen was aimed at weaning immigrants off of their food traditions and toward a "New England diet" see Laura Shapiro's excellent Perfection Salad pages 147 ff. Apparently the plans for the New England Kitchen began before the fair plans been begun. The image offered here labeled "Interior View" was one of a series of twelve photographs taken by W.E. James of 247 Fulton Steet. We have located no sets of the photographs in any institution collection. the photographer; John D. Chase, Optician unknown
