Once the construction was complete Toudy issued another version with fuller buildings as well as some changes to the foreground and center of the image. Toudy fl. 1865-1878 first established with William Toudy his lithography firm at 503-505 Chestnut and later merged with Geroge Wl. Ward & Co. in 1872 lasting less than 2 years. Henry became the sole owner by 1875 and were well known for their atlases maps and city views and he worked on several Stone & Stewart County Atlases from 1866-1877 as well as many of the Mid-Atlantic general surveys. They also managed to outlast a lawsuit over a print based on the drawing by Hermann Schwarzmann architect of the Centennial grounds entitled “Bird’s Eye View†after copyrighting this image in 1875. 190562003Portland OR: Albert Hess & Co. Lewis & Clark Centennial Exposition 1905. One souvenir postcard. 11.25 x 3.25 in. With birds-eye view by Caughey on recto advertisement for Willson in lower right corner center crease fold as issued; postcard information and cancelled stamp & postmark for Portland addressed to W.H. Bilyen 90 1/2 - 5th St. City Portland Oregon minor dustsoiling slight toning very minor wear at fold crease still VG copy. First edition of this uncommon folding souvenir postcard celebrating the Lewis & Clark Centennial Exposition featuring and reproducing the famed Caughey birds-eye. The birds-eye depicts the Guild’s Lake area of the grounds up and operating now bounded by Reed to Thurston Streets and 31st to 24th Streets in NW Portland. Prof. Willson fl. 1904-1920 began as a dance instructor with the Academy of Dancing located in the Hirsch Building but within a few years of the Exposition set up his own dance studio and was noted instructor of Waltzes. This card advertises the fact that couples could dance for .50¢ while an “Extra Lady†for .25¢ and even better for men in the very hot and humid Portland Pavilion they could dance without their coats in Shirt Waists. Caughey 1851-1925 was an Ohio Civil War veteran an itinerant chalk plate artist and had just created the year before in Feb. 1904 a Birds-Eye view reproduced over two pages in the Lewis and Clark Journal with noted birds-eye artist and cartographer Fred Routledge 1871-1936. Caughey began producing birds eye views in and around Portsmouth NH in the 1880’s and eventually became a commercial artist and newspaper editor in Portland Oregon where he would often produce images for the Mutual Label & Lithographic Co. 194210120Los Angeles: Wetzel Publishing Co. Near Fine in Near Fine dj. c.1942. First Edition. Hardcover. nice tight copy very minor soiling to top edge but no significant wear; jacket bright and clean with a trace of wear at several corners a couple of very tiny tears/chips along top edge. The first of several novels by this midwest-born L.A.-based author "active in club life" and a former "motion picture critic for 'Hollywood Lowdown'" not one of your major trade papers. The book presents "the living breathing story of the Pearson family told intimately and with brutal frankness from the personal viewpoint of the chief character Florrie Pearson the youngest. The mad unsavory escapades of her blood kin are lived through in the book with stirring realism. Early experiences the frustration of abject poverty turbulent times in America during 1917-1942 and last but not least their hot blood mixed with a strain of Cherokee Indian are among the causes that lie back of their sinful guiltiness as Florrie explains it." Last but not least indeed: as the author explains in her 4-page! foreword "the family's problem was one of a common handicap shared by their particular blood kin the problem of 'bad blood' or blood in which racial tendencies were said to be 'bad.' Also the frustration that comes with poverty." But lest you think you've stumbled into a midwestern Tobacco Road the author also assures us that "at no point does the book descend to the stark vulgarity sometimes masquerading under the pose of being merely 'brutal frankness.' But neither do I as an honest author make the unpardonable mistake of prudish understatement where merciless realism is called for by the story." So there you go: brutal frankness but not "merely" thus merciless yet stirring realism not an ounce of prudish understatement which as we all know is unpardonable but rather explicitly racist overtones which apparently are OK. Got it . Wetzel Publishing Co. hardcover books

191082170n.p. 1910. Very Good. 18 x 9 cm. Card almost entirely flat unlike most stereo cards. Light scuffing and wear. No caption front or back and no identification of publisher or date. BTW and three other African Americans eight white men are seated in two rowsseated at left end of back row. All men are wearing suits; two are holding white hats. We've seen other stereo card groupings of BTW with the white Tuskegee trustees. We wouldn't be surprised if many if not all of the prosperous-looking whites in this image were trustees. unknown
