Photo of Cyril Ritchard and Eddie Mayehoff on rear panel.This is the play based on the television script for an episode of Goodyear Television Playhouse aired on May 8 1955. The play starring Mr. Ritchard who also directed the play ran 388 performances in 1957-58. The play was then made into a Hollywood film starring Jerry Lewis in 1960. We can find no evidence that Miss Woodward ever played the role of Ellen Spelding. Sylvia Davis is listed in the playbill for the TV episode. Sarah Marshall is cast as Ellen in the Broadway play. Joan Blackman played her in the film adaptation. We know from biographical sources that Miss Woodward was a close friend of the author. Some reports suggest that she was engaged to Vidal prior to marrying Paul Newman. Vidal noted that it was all a stunt to attrract Newman's attention to Miss Woodward. She shared a house with Vidal in Los Angeles for a short time. Furthermore Paul Newman shared living quarters with Vidal at an earlier time. String-bound clothcovered photo-album printed by Vidal & Sohn Tempo-Werke an automotive company founded in Hamburg in 1924 and continued in existence through 1977. During World War II the company produced small military vehicles. This photo-album was created by the company for the purpose of collecting small black and white photo-cards showing the various models of truck created by the company. The album is not dated. While not completely filled with the photos there are 22 pictures present and all in fine condition. One of the images shows a Vidal & Sohn truck with a swattika which gives some indication of the era from which this album was printed. Handomely illustratedon the front panel. From the estate of actress Monique van Vooren. <br/><br/>Loosely based on Vidal's 1948 classic landmark novel "The City and the Pillar" one of the few books of the period which portrayed overt homosexuality as natural and without moral ramifications.<br/><br/>In 1970 and 1971 Variety International reported Franco Rossellini had been in discussion with Vidal to produce his screenplay adaptation of his 1948 novel with Vidal also slated to direct reiterated in William Hawes' 2008 book "Caligula and the Fight for Artistic Freedom: the Making Marketing and Impact of the Bob Guccione Film." According to Hawe's the production had not gotten off the ground because "funding proved to be insufficient even for a low-budget version."<br/><br/>Black titled wrappers.
