18874Paris, Capelle, 1846. (4), 500 pp. 8vo. Modern half morocco, marbled boards, raised bands with gilt lettering. Bel Bo, Fourier, p. 69; DBMOF, iii, p. 502; Goldsmiths 34912; not in Kress; not in Einaudi. First edition. Vidal marks the transition from utopian socialism of Saint Simon and Fourier to collectivist socialism. 'In his works, as in those of his contemporary Pecqueur (.....) the principal doctrines of collectivism are clearly expressed and reduced to formulas; among these are the so-called 'iron-law' of wages, the theory that wealth is the produce of work 'of others', and that economic evolution leads infallibly to the socialisation of land and of capital. Vidal, however, does not go so far as this in his conclusions. He contents himself with cooperation for producers, profit-sharing for labourers, and a minimum wage fixed by law. His principal works are De la répartition des richesses .... , a critical explanation of the doctrines of the liberal school and those of the principal French socialists, interesting even at the present day ....' (Palgrave, iii, p. 621). - With stamp on title and page 1, some underlining, a faint and small stain in lower blank margin, occasional spotting.

Gore Vidal 1925-2012 wrote a new introduction for this fiftieth anniversary edition of his first novel composed during World War II when he was a nineteen-year-old first mate on an Army supply ship in the Aleutians.

The battles are far removed but nature becomes the enemy in the form of a storm at sea and the psychological subject is the tedium of waiting for the war to end.

Reproduced are plans for the type of freight-supply ship Vidal was assigned to and that he used as the setting for the novel. The drawings were found by Hoyem with assistance from the San Francisco Maritime Museum and the Whatcom Museum in Bellingham Washington. They show the outboard profile deck plans for the navigation bridge and main- and below-deck arrangements.

Stephanie Dal Porto who answered the Press's telephone was terribly worried that Gore Vidal would call from Italy and that she would impulsively imitate the voice of the comedienne Lily Tomlin playing a receptionist by responding: "Yes Mr. Veedle!" When he did call Hoyem answered and the author said that he had not replied to emails because his Internet connection and computer had been zapped by lightening.

__POSTAGE: International customers please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.

___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. 1973126791New York: Random House 1973. First edition of this classic novel. Octavo original cloth. Association copy inscribed by the author on the half-title page "Valerie -- love -- Gore." The recipient Valerie Gore was the author’s sister. Vidal’s father remarried in 1939 and had two children with his second wife; Valerie was born in 1946. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket jacket laminated by Vidal. Jacket design by Jack Ribik. Here is an extraordinary portrait of one of the most complicated—and misunderstood—figures among the Founding Fathers. In 1804 while serving as vice president Aaron Burr fought a duel with his political nemesis Alexander Hamilton and killed him. In 1807 he was arrested tried and acquitted of treason. In 1833 Burr is newly married an aging statesman considered a monster by many. But he is determined to tell his own story and he chooses to confide in a young New York City journalist named Charles Schermerhorn Schuyler. Together they explore both Burr's past—and the continuing civic drama of their young nation. Burr is the first novel in Gore Vidal's Narratives of Empire series which spans the history of the United States from the Revolution to post-World War II. With their broad canvas and sprawling cast of fictional and historical characters these novels present a panorama of American politics and imperialism as interpreted by one of our most incisive and ironic observers. "A novel of Stendhalian proportions. . . . It is probably impossible to be an American and not be fascinated and impressed by Vidal's telescoping of our early history. . . . Always absorbing" The New Yorker. Random House hardcover
